Arafat buried amid chaotic scenes at the Mukata

Palestinian leader laid to rest in Ramallah not before tens of thousands of
Palestinians swarmed the helicopter that carried his body from Egypt as police
struggled to hold them back by firing their weapons in the air.

An improvised funeral was held this afternoon in Ramallah amid chaotic scenes
as thousands of Palestinian mourners flooded into the Mukata and mobbed his
coffin after it arrived for burial on Friday.

The helicopter that carried his body from Egypt, landed in the compound at
about 2 pm, as at least 200,000 Palestinians awaited touchdown. Thousands
swarmed the chopper as police struggled to hold them back by firing their
weapons in the air.

PA leaders Abu Mazen, Abu Ala, Saeb Erekat, Yasser Abed Rabo and also chief of
Egyptian intelligence Omar Suleiman pleaded with the mob to clear the way and
enable a dignified burial ceremony. Their efforts were in vain.

After 25 minutes it was decided to take out the coffin and carry it to the
burial spot through the crowds. Eventually, Arafat was buried amid the chaos
without eulogies or speeches.

It is unclear whether Arafat’s widow suha remained in the helicopter or was
rushed to a side room. In any case, she did not attend the actual burial of her
husband.

For several hours, hundreds of Palestinian police had tried to keep the growing
crowd back from the walls of the compound, but at one point, mourners managed
to break through gates and climb over walls.

A top Arafat aide, Tayeb Abdel Rahim, appealed to the crowd to move back from
the gates.

This morning, a short funeral service was held in Cairo attended by dozens of
world leaders and senior ministers.

The PA chief's coffin was carried into a mosque, after prayers were offered for
the Palestinian leader in front of presidents, kings and envoys from over 60
countries.

"He has served his people all his life, until he faced his God, with courage
and honesty. Let us pray for his soul," Egypt's Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar
Mohammed Sayed Tantawi told the gathered dignitaries.

After a traditional funeral prayer lasting only a couple of minutes, Arafat's
body was carried away by a horse-drawn carriage, accompanied by an Egyptian
honor guard.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak arrived at the nearby condolences tent and
received visitors. Palestinian leaders, including Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen),
Fatah leader Farouk Kaddoumi welcomed the guests from around the world.

Among the dignitaries were Syrian president Bashar al Assad, Tunisian president
Ben Ali, the Jordanian king, the Algerian president, the Yemeni president Ali
Saleh, Sultan Hasanal Bolkiah of Brunei, South African President Thabo Mbeki,
European Union Foreign Policy chief Javier Solana and Pope Shenouda III, head
of Egypt's Coptic Othodox Church. The United States sent Assistant Secretary of
State William Burns.

Arafat's coffin, flown from a Paris military base, arrived in Cairo late
Thursday. Authorities mounted a maximum security operation around the airport,
increasing police guards and stationing observers on tall buildings.

Suzanne Mubarak, wife of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, hugged Arafat's
widow, Suha upon her arrival.

Arafat's coffin was taken to the nearby Galaa Club, a compound that includes a
hospital, mosque and social club for military officers. It was to be held
overnight in the hospital and was to go to a mosque at the club on Friday
morning for the funeral.

Palestinian officials have repeatedly noted that when an independent
Palestinian state is formed, with Jerusalem as its capital, Arafat’s body will
be transferred to the Temple Mount.
