Israeli army apologises to Israeli Arabs

20.05.02, 21:27
An Israeli military spokesman says an inquiry's been opened at the highest
level to look into cases of Israeli citizens hurt in incidents involving
soldiers.

The army has apologised for the killing of two Israeli Arabs in separate
incidents since Friday.

An Israeli-Arab doctor died at an army checkpoint near Hebron on Saturday after
troops shot at his car - initial reports had identified him as a Palestinian -
and on Friday, soldiers fatally wounded an Israeli-Arab woman near the town of
Tulkarm.

The woman was in a car with Israeli number plates, and the military initially
said she'd been shot by Palestinians.

Her family accused the army of targeting Arabs, and wants the soldiers involved
to be prosecuted.

An Israeli newspaper said some senior Israeli officers were concerned that
troops might be shooting too quickly.

The report said commanders were reviewing soldiers' firing orders.
