Probe Of Alleged Bomb Plot Too Narrow, Muslims Fear

TEMPLE TERRACE - As local Muslims called for a more intense probe
of an alleged plan to bomb mosques, a magistrate decided Tuesday
that the man accused of the plot should be examined by a
psychiatrist.
Representatives from 19 Islamic organizations said they fear that
Seminole podiatrist Robert J. Goldstein didn't act alone in what
police say was a plot to attack mosques. Authorities say he had a
stockpile of weapons, including sniper rifles, mines and plastic
explosives.

Sami Al-Arian, a University of South Florida professor who is
being investigated for alleged ties to terrorists, said members
of targeted mosques aren't being fully informed by the FBI and
the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

``We would like to meet with the top FBI agent in town,'' Al-
Arian said. ``We would like to meet with the top ATF agent, not
just the street agents.''

Mahmud Ahmed of the Islamic Society of New Tampa said he doesn't
think law enforcement or the news media are treating Goldstein's
planned attack as an act of terrorism.

``We are waging a global war on terrorism, but now we have a
terrorist in our own back yard, ready to kill hundreds of us,''
Ahmed said. ``Who are his accomplices? What is his organization?
Where did he get the money for this?''

Federal law enforcement agencies said they are pursuing all
leads.

The FBI, ATF and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office are
conducting a joint probe, which will look into possible hate
crimes and civil rights violations, an FBI statement said.

But before Goldstein stands trial, he must undergo a psychiatric
evaluation, U.S. Magistrate Thomas McCoun III ruled.

McCoun also ruled Goldstein will remain in jail pending trial
because he is a danger to the community.

Goldstein's attorney, Myles Malman, said his client has a long
history of emotional disturbances. His client had been taking
five prescriptions for major depression, manic depression and
back pain. But his medicine has been adjusted at the jail.

``He is unable to properly assist me in defending him,'' Malman
said.

Outside the courthouse, Malman told reporters his client's
written plans to destroy an Islamic education center ``had an
element of fantasy to it.''

``If there were co-conspirators ... they would have been arrested
by now,'' he said.

Goldstein, 37, faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on
charges of possession of a nonregistered destructive device and
attempting to use an explosive to damage and destroy Islamic
centers.

Pilar Saad, president of the United Muslim Association of Tampa
Bay Women, joined those who were calling for a thorough
investigation. She said Muslim women and children are afraid for
their safety because some people blame all Muslims for the Sept.
11 attacks.

Investigators said they are going at full speed.

Agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and ATF
began canvassing Islamic centers and mosques Monday, said Mark
Dubina, special agent supervisor with the Regional Domestic
Security Task Force.

By the end of Tuesday, each of the mosques and Islamic centers in
Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough and Polk counties were to have been
contacted.

Investigators are trying to determine whether there is a larger
conspiracy to damage Islamic institutions or injure Muslims,
Dubina said.
