Poland: return or settlement of armed forces
The Cabinet discussed in March 1945 the possibility that, following a
political settlement in Western Europe, Polish troops serving in Western
Europe might be unwilling to return to Poland and whether they might be given
the right to become British subjects.
Also discussed was the reaction of the dominions to being asked if they could
take any Poles, and the possibility of their being used as an occupying force
in Germany, Conceding to the Poles might lead other nationalities to seek
naturalisation and an increase in the Jewish population could lead to civil
disturbance after the war.
P.M.
The Dom. replies are not unpromising. Why not naturalise them even
tho´ it doesn´t carry admission to B. Doms? Useful for occupn
of Germany as B. force, releasing B. soldiers to come home. Then,
if things don´t clear up, we will give you B. nationality.
H.O.
Want an opportunity to put counter-arguments.
P.M.
a) gratitude to the Poles b) population is wealth. c) precedent
K.O.
German Legion settled in Africa: stayed steady with
British in Boer War…
H.O.
…Any large increase in foreign populn increases risk of disorder -
anti-semitism is just below the surface.
S/S Air …Remember they came to our aid in B[attle of] Britain . . . Not much
we can do for them. If in the last resort we can do nothg. else, surely let´s
do this for them
