Nobel Prize 2002
A Note - Jewhoo was able, with the help of some friends, to absolutely
confirm that 4 of the 13 Nobel Prize winners in 2002 are Jewish. The best
researched figures indicate that at least 159 Jewish or "half Jewish"
persons have won a Nobel between 1901 (when the awards began) and 2002. This
represents 22% percent of all awards to individuals. (This figure does
includes some laureates who converted away from Judaism---usually for career
reasons and not conviction---and some "half Jewish" persons who did not
primarily identify as Jewish. It also includes one convert to Judaism).
Jews, as defined above, have won 36% of all Nobels awarded Americans. In an
amusing sidelight, the number of Jewish laureates, as defined above, is
running neck-and-neck with number of Jews who have played major league
baseball. A cosmic connection? Probably not. However, it is a factoid you
can share with your friends. Seriously, "why" there are so many Jewish
winners is a question that is impossible to answer in less than a long essay-
--and one has to assume that the reader has a pretty strong background in
Jewish history and in the history of Western civilization. I immediately
dismiss the explanation of 'genetics' as almost certainly wrong and--in any
event
