SWEDISH CULTURAL CONSULTANTS DEPORTED FROM ISRAEL

On Thursday, 21 August 2003, nine Swedish consultants representing various
cultural fields and cultural centres, as well the Swedish international
development cooperation agency (Sida), landed at Ben Gurion airport to begin
their one-week visit to Palestine and, in particular, Bethlehem at the
invitation of the Bethlehem Peace Center (BPC).

Upon their arrival in Israel, six of the nine consultants were taken into
Police custody at the airport where they were subjected to intense questioning
and were asked to sign a disclaimer if they were to be permitted to enter
        Israel.

The (handwritten) disclaimer stated that the consultants could only enter
Israeli if they did not travel to Bethlehem as this would require a special
authorization from the Israeli military authorities. A violation of this travel
ban would result in the deportation of the consultant and a ban to travel to
        Israel for ten years.

In spite of direct intervention through the Swedish Consulate in Jerusalem and
the Swedish Embassy in Tel Aviv with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and the Ministry of Interior on behalf of its citizens, Israeli authorities did
not back down from this position and insisted that the consultants sign the
        disclaimer or face deportation.

Five of the consultants refused to sign the disclaimer and were forced to spend
the night in a locked cell at Ben Gurion airport like common criminals. Their
mobile phones were confiscated over night. This morning at 0530 hours, the
consultants were driven directly from their prison to the airplane under police
escort where they boarded a plane to take them back to Sweden. Their passports
were returned to them only once they were on the airplane.

The sixth consultant, a naturalized Swede of Iranian origin, signed the
disclaimer, but left Israel today for fear of persecution.

The Bethlehem Peace Center, on behalf of all the ordinary and well-meaning
citizens of Bethlehem and Palestine, protest the deportation of the Swedish
cultural consultants in the strongest possible terms and wish to unveil the
shame of the Israeli authorities in their efforts of undermine Palestinian
        civil society yet again.

The objective of the visit, which was organized by BPC in coordination with the
Swedish Consulate in Jerusalem and Sida, was to meet and exchange ideas with a
number of prestigious cultural institutions in the West Bank, including the
Bethlehem Peace Center, the International Center of Bethlehem, the Arab Women's
Union, the Center for Cultural Heritage Preservation, National Conservatory of
Music, the A.M. Qattan Foundation, the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre, Yabous
        and many others.

By no conceivable standard was this group of Swedish consultants in any way a
threat to the security of the State of Israel and by no international or local
legal standard did their arrival in Israel warrant their questioning,
        imprisonment or deportation.

Their aim was to offer support and to help strengthen cultural life in
Palestine as a fundamental cornerstone of its incipient civil society.

The treatment and ultimate deportation of the Swedish cultural ambassadors is
more revealing of Israel's attempts to paralyse all Palestinian efforts to
build a viable, civilized country than it is of any alleged Palestinian efforts
        to nurture terrorism.

On his Air Force One flight to Georgia, Bush called the prime minister of
Sweden to express America's condolences for the violent stabbing death of
foreign minister Anna Lindh. He also talked with President Nestor Kirchner of
Argentina to congratulate him on Argentina reaching agreement with the
International Monetary Fund on the outlines of a three-year, $21 billion debt
          refinancing package.

Lindh was honored in church services, and the imam of Stockholm's mosque, Hedi
Arfaoui, said its Friday prayer service was dedicated to her.

"My own country is right now in shock and struck by tragedy," Swedish King Carl
XVI Gustaf said during a state visit to Denmark.

Pope John Paul (news - web sites) II expressed his condolences on the second
day of a trip to Slovakia.

President Bush (news - web sites) called Prime Minister Goeran Persson to
express condolences, said White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan.

Persson urged voters to not let the murder deter them from voting in the
referendum, calling it a way to honor Lindh's commitment to democracy.

"Over that right, we must never let violence be victorious," Persson said in a
speech to more than 4,000 people gathered for a somber rally just blocks away
        from where she was slain.

The crowd filled Sergels Torg square to listen to Persson's speech and musician
Eva Dahlgren, who sang songs dedicated to Lindh.

Critics said SAPO should have learned more from the killing of Palme, who was
shot while walking home from a movie theater with his wife.

Security was tightened after Palme's murder, but only the prime minister and
the king are afforded round-the-clock protection. Other Cabinet ministers, such
as Lindh, only have them when SAPO says they're needed.

Sweden: biggest demonstration in Stockholm since the 1960s
From a member of REVOLUTION, Sweden: 18 February 2003

Many of us demonstrating yesterday in Sweden were quite surprised about the
massive gathering of tens of thousands of protesters. The network expected
10,000 - maybe 20,000 - to come. The result was the biggest demonstration for a
very long time in the history of Stockholm. Some Comrades in Arbetarmakt
compared it with the Vietnam-movement of the 1960s but said this was probably
even bigger. And the war hasn't started yet! Official reports from the police
say 35,000 demonstrated against the war in Stockholm. The most optimistic
numbers from the organisers put it at 100 000. Maybe that's a bit optimistic,
but if there were more than 50 000, I wouldn't be surprised at all. In the
whole of Sweden maybe over 100 000 demonstrated in more than 25 cities.

When the comrades of Revo and Arbetarmakt arrived at "Norra Bantorget", the
square where the demo was to start at 2.00pm, there were already masses of
people there. It was well nigh impossible to walk around, the crowd was so
densely packed. We were carrying a Revolution-banner with the text "Defend
Iraq" and also REVO flags and placards with "Defend Iraq - Defeat imperialism"
on them. After many speakers official (Maj Britt Theorin, socialdemocrats, Lars
Ohly from the Left Party, representatives from bourgeois parties except the
conservatives etc) the demonstration finally started to move.

Together with lots of demonstrators we took another direction, the street that
we were suppose to march on just couldn't give enough room for all of us! Just
as we started moving we were informed from other demonstrators that the front
of the demo had already reached the goal, the American embassy, several streets
away. At this time we really understood this was something of a victory in
itself. A real turning point for the antiwar movement in Sweden!

The Revo contingent was very lively. It was hard to count since many people
joined it when we started marching. We chanted slogans like: "Smash US
imperialism", "Defend Iraq", "George Bush, we know you, daddy was a killer
too". We also chanted a slogan I learned from a British REVO comrade in
Copenhagen "No justice! No peace! Revolution in the middle east!" plus of
        course "One solution - REVOLUTION.

At Stureplan, a street which the bourgeois youth among others use to hang out
in big exclusive party places, with guards separating the poor from the rich,
the blacks from whites etc, we did a street-run stopping for a while and then
running to the others in front of us. This was fun and got a good response.

When we finally reached the American embassy after marching for maybe one and a
half hours demonstrators were already leaving. When we were walking down at
Strandvägen we saw the last contingent of young student groups pass by. And our
contingent was placed quite far back in the demo as a whole. This was really
        big!

Just one week ago the mobilisers were expecting maybe 10 000 to come for the
demo. With the demonstrations against the war in Afghanistan last year
gathering only 2-3000 protesters some of us comrades guessed maybe 5000 plus
would come. That proved to be very wrong. By the end of this week however, we
could all feel the impact of the mobilisation. This was not primarily a result
of the campaign driven by the organisers (a stupid bunch of old style-
Stalinists and post-Stalinists together with reformists from the Left Party who
dominate the network against war), but more a result of several factors. The
mobilisation got big coverage in the newspapers and on television.

This, together with a rising tide of opinion against the war and growing anger
against the government, led to the increase in numbers. The Swedish prime
minister Göran Persson has become famous for comments such as "A short war
could be good for the world economy". The government-line is also very
opportunist, the Social Democrats in Sweden have a policy expressed in the
foreign minister Anna Lindh's "We are neither pacifists, nor activists": they
hope the UN will unite to support the war. However, after this huge protest
they might back off a bit. This has also been expressed by Anna Lindh telling
the press that Sweden now supports the French UN-policy. The applause at Norra
Bantorget when an MP of the Left Party, Lars Ohly, said in his speech that
Göran Persson and Anna Lindh had acted shamelessly was prolonged.

Altogether, yesterday's demonstration in Stockholm together with demos in other
cities across Sweden showed that the antiwar movement is here to stay in great
numbers. I just read a report from a comrade in Gothenburg confirming that more
than 30 000 people participated in the antiwar demonstration. That is more
people than in the protests against the EU-summit just two and a half year ago!
This means that there exists a good ground for building up a revolutionary
campaign against the war. This is what Revolution will try to do.

bilderna. Inga nya gripanden gjordes under söndagskvällen.

enligt länspolismästarens talesman Stina Wessling omkring tusen.

Under
natten till söndagen kontrollerade polispatruller vid sex tillfällen olika
personer som man hade fått tips om under natten.
