Dziurawiec zwyczajny (Hypericum perforatum) - taka polna roslinka z malymi,
      zoltymi kwiatuszkami.

          Do you know why?
          • caffe_latte Re: St. Johns wort 26.03.04, 23:13
why? because it has been shown to alleviate the effects of depression as
            effectively as prescription anti-depressants..
It is an alternative medication for depression because it is available over the
counter, has less side effects and costs a fraction of what commonly prescribed
anti-depressants cost. It is used for treatment of mild to moderate depression
and is especially popular in Germany.

Correction- i's not as effective as Rx antidepressants..

              Key Facts
St. John's wort is an herb that has been used for centuries for medicinal
purposes, including to treat depression. The composition of St. John's wort and
how it might work are not well understood. There is some scientific evidence
that St. John's wort is useful for treating mild to moderate depression.
However, recent studies suggest that St. John's wort is of no benefit in
treating major depression of moderate severity. More research is required to
help us know whether St. John's wort has value in treating other forms of
depression. St. John's wort interacts with certain drugs, and these
interactions can be dangerous. Herbal products vary greatly as to their
              chemical composition and quality.

Well,it problaly works in the same way as anti-depressant drugs - it corrects
the imbalance of natural chemicals between neurons.

              It`s not true, of course.
Anyway - if something is "herbal" it doesn't mean it's safe.

I did not suggest that it was safe because it is an herb, I mearly said that it
has been shown to produce less side effects. As I said, it is not recommended
in major clinical depression but can be hepful for mild to moderate depression.
As a medical student I have seen quite a few patients respond very well to
hypericum. It is not a substitute for prescription anti-depressants (SSRI'S,
MAOI's, etc), it is mearly another option.
It is likely hypericum works on both on norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake.
It also produces an approximate 20% MAO inhibition which contributes to the
serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibiting effect.

                      1) I did not prescribe hypericum
                      2) I did not recommend someone take it
                      3) I did not say it is a pancaea
                      4) I did not say it was proven
                      5) I did not say it was the best course of treatment
                      6) I did not say it is a replacement for anti-depressants like SSRI's

If someone understood that I did then I apologize, it was not my intention.

It is (in my opinion, only):
                      1) an option for SOME people
                      2) it CAN BE effective for SOME people

Depression is a serious and debilitating disease and I take it very seriously.
I wasnt dispensing medical advice, just answering a question. ("what is
                      St.John's wort?")
                      Geez, enough already.
