Something czy anything?

03.08.11, 20:13

      Anything new?
      or
      Something new?
      or
      What else is new?

Some and any in what looks like a question can mean pretty much the same. But usually they don't.

Try to figure out what the following three "questions" really mean.

          1. Would you like any milk?
          2. Would you like some milk?
          3. May I have some milk?

To help you with this, I'll give you a hint:
          1. A question is asked in a grocery store
          2. Host asks his guest
          3. Guest asks his host.

Yes, I know these differences. I was asking about a specific situation:

A(in one conversation): My boyfriend is a surgeon, he makes lots of money.
            B: XXXXXX( comments)

A:(another conversation several days later):My boyfriend is a surgeon, he has a lot of paperwork on his hands and.....
B:Yes, yes, we know you have a rich and busy partner.

A(yet another one after some time): Talking about jobs, my boyfriend is a surgeon and he has a lot of work on his hands.
B: Something new?( Or anything new?)

Which one fits better and can they be used here in varius contexts?
Context no 1: is there anything new about your boyfriend?
Contex no 2: is this you are telling us about something new we do not know about?
Contex no 3: like in a situation when, for instance, my best friend likes to wear red all the time. Other people sometimes joke about that. We meet again, I have look at her and notice her red belt (shoes). Smiling a bit ironically, I ask : "Something red"?

Make sure you know what context means. Your contexts 1, 2, and 3 are intended meanings and not contexts.

The two bare Something/Anything new? in the B-to-A reply context (yes, that’s a context) could be understood, with effort, to mean “ (Is there) something/anything new (happening in his career)? “, which would be somewhat related to your meaning 1.

But Something new? and Anything new? would somewhat differ in meaning.

Neither Something new? nor Anything new? suggests the sense of “Is this something new (that we don’t know about) ?

Smiling a bit ironically, I ask : "Something red?

Something red what? What are you trying to say?

Something red today for a change?

Either Anything red today for a change? or Something red today for a change if you are talking to her on the phone.

W tym kontekscie nie uzylbym "Something new?". Jakos glupio brzmi.

        cheers

          Ameicans would say:
          What's new?
          Any news?
