Past Perfect

Past Perfect Simple & Past Perfect Continuous, Past Simple, strona bierna

1. We weren’t / hadn’t been allowed to touch anything in the room before
the police had taken / took photos and fingerprints.

2. The last festival wasn’t / hadn’t been very successful, don’t you
think ?

3. I had never ridden / been riding a horse before.
Dlaczego “ridden”

dzięki :)
pozdrawiam :)

The "before" in that sentence is sloppy. The best way of expressing that
sentence is "We were not allowed to touch anything until the police had taken".
The "had" of "have taken" is the closest we get to the past subjunctive that a
language like Spanish, with its more developed verb, would look for there.

Alternative explanation: at the time, we heard "you are not allowed to touch
anything until the police have taken the fingerprints", and with reported
speech you've got a sequence of tenses which moves everything one stage back in
      the past.

      > think ?
      > Ma być “wasn’t”, dlaczego tak ma być?
      >

Because nothing else happens. Let's imagine we have this sentence: "The last
festival had not been very successful, so they decided to change the venue this
year" - in this case there is a reason for the pluperfect. You are comparing a
past event to one that was already finished in the past and that impacts on it.

      > 3. I had never ridden / been riding a horse before.
      > Dlaczego “ridden”
      >

Because the context is your life experience - have you ever ridden a horse?
Have you ever driven an automatic car? Have you ever been DP'd on a wet leather
sofa? Experience gained is always reported with the perfect tense.

"I had been riding the horse for several hours when suddenly the saddle fell
off" - here you use a continuous because you are setting the scene for a past
event to happen suddenly in the midle of an unfinished past action. There is no
      such context here.

      OK?

Galopujesz po tych czasach i dlatego (moze) zaczyna sie gmatwac. Pamietaj: past
perfect to czas ZAprzeszly, czyli dla czynnosci wczesniejszej wobec innej
      przeszlej.
      1. We weren't allowed (nie pozwolono nam) zanim policja nie zrobila zdjec
(hadn't taken), czyli najpierw policja miala zrobic zdjecia, potem wolno bylo
      dotykac...
musisz wykazywac KOLEJNOSCI zdarzen, badz czynnosci i uzyjesz najogolniejszego
Past, czyli simple past.
wystarczaja TRZY podstwawowe czasy, najbardziej ogolne: simple present, past,
and future. Wszystkie perfect i continuous to takie wariacje na temat....

      dzis. :)

Tak naprawde, to ten nieszczesny past perfect zrozumiesz najlepiej w
      nastepujacych przykladach:

By the time we GOT to the airport, the plane HAD already LEFT.
When I CAME to school, the bell HAD already RUNG/the exam HAD just BEGUN, so I
      was late.
He felt he HADN't BEEN LOVED (albo had NEVER been loved) until he MET her.

sympathize AND apologize. I've always had sympathy for the feeble of mind and

First, learn how to think clearly and write properly, Anna-in-the-dark.
Only then, should you put something so complex as a keyboard under your itchy
fingers. For brain spasms and other itches, there really ARE other venues.

and you really OUGHT to stop degrading yourself so publicly.
You are forgiven. Go in peace.
