LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - At least 40 people died when a passenger jet crashed in
Peru's jungle on Tuesday, police said.

"Until now, there are 40 cadavers that rescue teams are pulling from the
wreckage. There could be more deaths, we assume some 60 people in total, since
we've rescued 20 injured people," a police officer in the town of Pucallpa told
        RPP radio.

Scores killed in Peru airliner crash
      by
      Tuesday 23 August 2005 11:21 PM GMT

The plane crashed in Pucallpa, 785km northeast of Lima

Between 70 and 80 people have been killed after a passenger jet crashed in a
jungle on Tuesday, Peru's President Alejandro Toledo says.
"There were between 20 and 30 survivors," on the jet which was on a flight
between the capital Lima and Pucallpa, Toledo said.
The plane was carrying 93 passengers and seven crew when it went down in a
      storm.
Earlier, a police officer at the scene reported many deaths.
"Until now, there are 40 cadavers that rescue teams are pulling from the
wreckage. There could be more deaths, we assume some 60 people in total, since
we've rescued 20 injured people," a police officer in the town of Pucallpa told
      RPP radio.
The reports said the Tans airline plane tried to make an emergency landing
      during bad weather.
Transportation Minister Jose Ortiz had previously said most of those on board
      had survived.
      Tragic month
The crash - the fifth this month involving a passenger plane -
comes a week after a chartered Colombian jetliner crashed in
Venezuela, killing all 160 on board.
A Cypriot Boeing 737 crashed on 14 August near Athens, killing all 121 people
on board; a Tunisian-chartered ATR-42 dived into the sea off Sicily on 6
August, killing 16 people; and an Air France Airbus A340 crashed on landing in
Toronto on 2 August . All 309 passengers and crew survived.

A spokesman for the state-run airline Tans said the Boeing 737-200 plane, which
had a capacity of 120 passengers, made an emergency landing without its landing
gear in the jungle town of Pucallpa, 785km northeast of Lima.
      Ghastly sight
"We are standing next to the cabin and we can see the body and it appears that
it is a flight attendant in her uniform. We can also see a person, it appears
to be a female," a correspondent for Radioprogramas radio said.
"There are bodies of children. Many bodies."
Radio reports of an accident started coming in after 4pm (2100 GMT) saying a
plane had crashed about 9km from the municipal airport near the jungle city
      Pucallpa.
Lizandro Torro, a spokesman for Tans, which is run by Peru's military, said the
airline was evaluating the scope of the accident and would provide a statement
      shortly.
A man identifying himself as William Zea, a passenger on
the plane, told CPN radio by telephone that the plane was
travelling from Lima to Pucallpa, and from there onto the
northern jungle city of Iquitos when "the plane suffered
some malfunction and we went down".
Tomas Ruiz, another passenger, told Radioprogramas: "It
seems it was a matter of the weather. Ten minutes before we
were to land in Pucallpa, the plane began to shake a lot."

TANS to taka dziwna linia, ktorej wlascielem sa Sily Powietrzne Peru i w ktorej
lataja piloci wywodzacy sie z wojska. Moze pomyslal, ze uda mu sie boeingiem
zrobic to co pewnie kilka razy zrobil wojskowym jetem?
          Anyway - kolejna tragedia! :(

Choc z drugiej strony, gdyby rzeczywiscie probowal wyladowac na drodze, a nie w
lesie - jak twierdzi wiekszosc prasowych depesz - to dlaczego nie wyciagnal
podwozia? A nawet powiadomil kontrole, ze bedzie probowal wykonac awaryjne
            ladowanie bez podwozia?

              CNN:

The airline said the pilot, who did not report mechanical problems, apparently
was trying to make an emergency landing during stormy weather Tuesday afternoon.

                  co wlasnie znalazlem:

But Elliot and Victor Girao, a former president of Peru's Association of Pilots,
said the crash appeared to be caused by pilot error. Elliot said the pilot
should have opted to avoid the storm and land at another airport.

Both said the pilot was flying too close to the ground while making the approach
to the airport from four miles out, making it difficult to control the aircraft
                  against wind shear.

"They were coming in very low, looking for the airstrip. A big beginner's
                  error," Girao said.
