Drinking one 12-oz. beer every day may be one of the best ways to prevent a
heart attack.
Using a group of 48 male volunteers ages 46 to 72--all of whom had coronary
heart disease--the Israeli researchers concluded that beer caused heart-
healthy changes, including decreased cholesterol levels, increased
antioxidant levels, and reduced levels of fibrinogen, a clot-producing
protein.
In the study, the 48 participants were divided into two groups. One group
drank the equivalent of 12 ounces of beer a day--a standard pale lager with 5
percent alcohol by volume--for 30 consecutive days. The other group drank
mineral water. During this time, all the men ate a similar healthy diet that
was rich in fruits and vegetables. None of the men suffered a heart attack
during the study period.
