Feeding cereal too early or too late to infants susceptible to diabetes can
dramatically increase their risk of developing the disease, a new study shows.
Compared with children who start eating cereals between the recommended 4
to 6 months of age, babies fed cereals - any tipe of grain and even rice -
before that crucial window are four times as likely to develop symptoms that
lead up to juvenile diabetes.
And infants who start eating cereals after that window are five times as
likely to develop those symptoms, according to a study of 1,183 kids with a
family history of juvenile diabetes.
Lead researcher Jill Norris of the University of Colorado noted that
introducting solid foods too soon may destroy insulin-producing cells in the
pancreas.
A separate study found a similar risk from early exposure to foods
containing gluten - found in grains such as wheat, barley and oat.
Both studies appear in yesterday's Journal of the American Medical
Association.
