CALY ARTYKUL:
Maid to the stars admits cleaning up
February 9, 2006 - 11:06AM
A housekeeper for celebrities, who cleaned some of her famous clients out of
their jewels and other valuables, pleaded guilty to grand larceny, forgery
and identity theft.
Lucyna Turyk-Wawrynowicz, 35, who faces a prison sentence of up to three
years, agreed to a plea deal offered by the Manhattan District Attorney's
office and admitted she stole diamond earrings worth $95,000 that belonged to
actress Grace Hightower, who is married to Robert De Niro.
She also admitted to Judge Renee White to fraudulently using a customer's
credit card 17 times at a high-end clothing store, and to stealing and using
a Social Security number.
The maid's other celebrity victims included actress Candice Bergen and
socialite Renee Rockefeller.
Before the plea deal, Turyk-Wawrynowicz had faced up to 15 years in prison if
convicted on all charges. She will be sentenced on Feb. 21.
After completing her sentence, the judge said the Polish immigrant, who was
in the United States illegally, would be turned over to the Department of
Homeland Security for possible deportation.
After her arrest last year, Turyk-Wawrynowicz told police that if Hightower
had "treated me better, with more respect, I probably wouldn't have done
this. She is mean.
"I didn't steal from Isabella Rossellini because she treated me well. I only
stole from people who didn't treat me with respect," she said.
