Princess Kiko pregnant; baby due in the autumn

Princess Kiko and her husband, Prince Fumihito, flank a container when a stork
is released in September 2005 at the Hyogo Prefectural Homeland for the
        Oriental White Stork.
Princess Kiko, wife of Emperor Akihito's second son, Prince Fumihito, is
pregnant with the couple's third child, the Imperial Household Agency said
        Tuesday.

The baby is due in the fall.

The 39-year-old princess and her husband, 40, have two daughters, Princesses
        Mako, 14, and Kako, 11.

It would be the fourth grandchild of the emperor and Empress Michiko.

Fumihito's elder brother, Crown Prince Naruhito, fathered Princess Aiko, 4,
        with Crown Princess Masako.

The Imperial Household Agency made a formal announcement Tuesday night.

Agency officials said doctors confirmed a heartbeat in the embryo using a
sonogram at the couple's Tokyo residence on Tuesday.

News of a new member of the imperial family comes as the government is moving
to revise the Imperial House Law to allow females and their descendants to
        ascend the Chrysanthemum throne.

However, conservative Diet members, especially those in the ruling Liberal
Democratic Party, oppose Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's stated intention to
pass the revision during the current Diet session.

No boy has been born in the imperial family since Fumihito in 1965.

If the emperor's next grandchild is a boy, he would be third in line to the
throne under the current Imperial House Law.

An advisory panel to the prime minister on imperial succession issued a report
in November recommending that women be allowed to become emperor. It also
recommended that female lineage should be permitted.

Fumihito hinted at the possibility of having another child at a news conference
marking his birthday in 2002, saying, "I get the impression that the daughters
want to care for a sister or a brother."

At his 2003 news conference, he said, "The situation is the same as last year."

The couple, both graduates of Gakushuin University, married in June 1990.

In December 2003, when Toshio Yuasa was serving as grand steward of the
Imperial Household Agency, he said, "Prince Fumihito may have his own ideas,
but from the standpoint of wanting prosperity of the imperial family, I'd like
them to have another child."(IHT/Asahi: February 8,2006

Preparation for Princess Kiko's childbirth begins
        Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 13:01 EST
TOKYO ? The Imperial Household Agency has begun preparation activities for
Princess Kiko's childbirth, which is expected this fall, such as by installing
a nursery at her palace in Tokyo's Akasaka district, agency officials said
        Wednesday.

The agency also plans to select a nurse to attend to the 39-year-old princess,
the wife of Emperor Akihito's younger son, Prince Akishino, the officials said.
The agency will formally announce her pregnancy possibly by the end of February
after her doctor at Tokyo's Maternal & Child Health Center Aiiku Hospital
confirms the development of the fetus.

Imperial succession bill may not be submitted, Koizumi hints
        Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 12:58 EST
TOKYO ? Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi hinted Wednesday that his government
has given up on presenting a bill to allow female monarchs to the current Diet
session through June 18, following the news the previous day of Princess Kiko's
        pregnancy.

"The bill should be enacted in a manner that would satisfy all parties
concerned after the issue is discussed cautiously," Koizumi told a House of
Representatives Budget Committee session. Koizumi's comments suggest that he is
becoming more hesitant about the government's plan to submit the bill to revise
        the Imperial House Law.
