JERUSALEM/GAZA (Reuters) - Israel has "marked for death" Hamas spiritual leader
Ahmed Yassin, following a suicide bombing that killed four Israeli security
personnel in Gaza, Israel's deputy defense chief said on Friday.

The wheelchair-bound Muslim cleric attended Friday prayers as usual at a mosque
near his Gaza City home and told reporters he would embrace "martyrdom." A
Palestinian cabinet minister said Israel was playing with fire by making the
threat.

Hamas, an Islamic group dedicated to Israel's destruction, claimed
responsibility for Wednesday's bombing by a Palestinian mother of two at a
border industrial zone. It killed three soldiers and a security officer,
further undermining chances of reviving a U.S.-backed peace plan.

"He is marked for death and he had better dig deep underground, where he won't
be able to tell the difference between day and night," Deputy Defense Minister
Zeev Boim said of Yassin.

"We will find him in his tunnels and liquidate him," he told Army Radio.

Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat told Reuters: "Escalating the Israeli
policy of assassinations will... lead to more escalation and a widening of the
cycle of violence, bloodshed and chaos."

Yassin survived with only a slight hand injury an Israeli assassination attempt
in September, when a warplane bombed a Gaza building just as he and other Hamas
leaders were leaving.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's deputy, Ehud Olmert, threatened
renewed military strikes on Palestinian militants "planning or setting in
motion acts of murder."

Along with a steep drop in suicide bombings in Israel, the army has scaled back
its attacks on Hamas leaders after a series of largely failed attempts to kill
them in the summer.

Israeli officials say army raids and a controversial barrier in the West Bank
are responsible for the relative lull in attacks inside Israel. But there has
been much speculation about a de facto cease-fire with Hamas, which both sides
deny.

NO TRUCE

"I repeat that there is no room to speak about a truce," Yassin, surrounded by
bodyguards, said outside the Gaza mosque. "Resistance must continue, until the
removal of the occupation."

Asked if he feared for his life, he replied: "They have tried to kill Sheikh
Ahmed Yassin before... I would like to say to them: We do not fear death
threats. We are seekers of martyrdom."

He said Israel knew he had "nothing to do with military activity" carried out
by Hamas's armed wing.

In Wednesday's bombing, Reem al-Reyashi, 22, detonated her explosives belt
during a security check inside the Erez crossing terminal on the Gaza-Israel
border. Reyashi, from a prominent merchant family, left behind a three-year-old
son and a daughter aged one.

It was the first time Hamas, behind dozens of suicide attacks in Israel, has
used a woman bomber. The group said it did so because of toughened Israeli
security obstacles facing its male bombers.

"She started asking (to carry out a bombing) before she was married and then
pursued her request after she gave birth to her first and second babies," a
Hamas source said.

Reyashi's brother said her family had been unaware of her intentions. "We were
shocked," Ayman al-Reyashi said, calling the bombing "an act of honor."

Relic of Relics
For centuries, many churches have had actual portions of the cross which Christ
was crucified upon. It would be interesting to try and assemble them back
together. It seems you might be able to construct many crosses from all the
pieces. If you have some spare cash, you can even get your own piece of history
on eBay here and here.
Other key relics include parts of the saints. As in actual parts. Actual body
parts. So much for honoring the dead. Many of these poor chaps bones are
scattered in churches all across Europe. They traveled more in death than in
life. And some shocking truth has been revealed which seems to have been
ommitted from the history books - some of these men had three hands while
others had two heads! I'm not entirely sure how such vivid physical
characteristics were missed, but we do have the physical evidence to prove it.
(And if you might need human relics for some reason, eBay once again proves its
worth here.)

However, all of these antiquities pale when compared to a certain item
currently in the posession of the Chicago Historical Society:


Hiding on a shelf deep in the archives of the Chicago Historical Society among
some 20 million other antiquities and documents of historical significance is
the oddest of treasures.
"Skin of Serpent."

That's what the plain white label on the outside of the plain gray box says. It
doesn't begin to tell the story.

Inside Archive Box #1920.1714 is a piece of the hide of the snake that tempted
Eve in the Garden of Eden.

I'm not making this up.

This, folks, is a true story.

At least, that's what the yellowing French label that's stuck to the front of
the framed glass behind which rests an 8-by-4-inch piece of something red and
scaly inside the gray archival box claims.

Specifically, the label says, "Peau du serpent qui a seduit la premiere femme"--
which, if you're Francais isn't as superb as mine, means "Skin of the serpent
who seduced the first woman."

The label goes on to say, in French, "It was killed by Adam the day after its
treachery. Adam used a stake, the traces of which can be seen. This skin was
part of the legacy of Adam, and it was preserved by his family in Asia."

It's signed with the assurance, "Seals of guarantee of doctors and
theologians."

This is truly amazing for two reasons. First, we have a real piece of history -
snakeskin over 6 millenium old. Second, we now know that the French language
actually came before all other human tongues ever spoken. These important
issues aside, the real question is what did the original serpent, the very one
who tempted Eve, look like:
What lies behind the gilt-framed glass, affixed to what appears to be a
document written on velum or some other kind of hide in some sort of Asian
characters, is rusty-red, scaly, old and leathery.
It looks like someone killed a pair of Bishop Don "Magic" Juan's cowboy boots,
tore off a piece and stuck it to an ancient takeout menu with a couple of big,
wax seals.

Or like a tiny piece of dragon skin, or a fabric sample from the costume
designer for Marilyn Manson, or a red armadillo pelt, if there were such a
thing.

What it doesn't look like is a piece of, arguably, millions- or at least
thousands-of-years-old snake skin.

Apparently that's because it's not.

What? It isn't real? How do they know for sure?
"It a fraud," Olivia Mahoney, chief curator at the historical society, was
telling me the other day.
Gasp!

"It's probably leather. People have speculated it might be alligator. But it's
highly doubtful that that is a serpent's skin," Mahoney said.

Not that the society's curators know for sure. See, they've never tested it to
see what it is, or how old it might be.

"We don't want to take it apart to analyze it because you could risk damaging
this piece," she said. "We've never had anyone in to really do hard research on
this because we know it's a fake."

It seems to me that the moral of this story is when creating a relic, be sure
it is not possible to get to the 'old' parts without destroying the whole
thing. That way, no one will ever attempt to prove its authenticity.
Ok, that was pretty weak. The real moral is that you can buy (or sell) ANYTHING
on eBay.

Now that the first public accusation of anti-Muslim bigotry has been leveled
at "Allah," I'm going to let the mask drop for a moment and respond to the e-
mail that was sent to Charles Johnson this morning.

In the first place, neither Charles nor anyone else on my blogroll has anything
to do with this site. Please don't bother them because you're angry at me. Go
here instead and start your own blog where you can rave to your heart's
content. Better yet, start a blog that goofs on the Christian god. Lord knows,
there's no shortage of material. If it's funny, "Allah" will even link to it.

That said, I want to make clear that I have nothing against Muslims--or the
adherents of any other faith, for that matter--who practice their religion
peacefully. This site is intended as a parody of the radical Islamist mindset
with which Americans have become only too familiar in the past two years. I
tried alluding in my last post to the distinction between radical and moderate
Islam by having "Allah" remark that most of his disciples pray only for
innocuous, beneficent things like food and good health. To those moderate
Muslims who read this site, then, I'd ask you to bear in mind that there's no
malice directed here at you or your beliefs, and I apologize if any offense is
given. To any radical Muslims who should read this site, I'd ask you to bear in
mind that I hope you die soon, and painfully.

The simple truth is that a million blogs like this one, updated constantly for
a million years, wouldn't do one-one millionth as much damage to Islam's
reputation as this did. So if you're really serious about confronting Islam's
enemies, my advice is not to worry so much about "Allah." Worry about this guy
instead:

The freight train rumbled to an agonizing stop on the rails inside of the
Auschwitz compound. The human cargo that was packed tightly into its bevy of
cattle cars continued to groan and clamor, suffering as they were from a four-
day journey without food, water, bathroom facilities, or even fresh air. The
Jewish prisoners were the latest victims of the Nazi campaign to liquidate the
Jewish population of Hungary, the last Jewish community to remain intact during
the war. Their final destination was the violent, Dantesque nightmare of
Auschwitz, the premier Nazi death factory in southwestern Poland, the most
efficient cog in the wheel of the Nazi’s Endlosung, Final Solution, to the so-
called Jewish question.

The doors of each cattle car were violently thrown open by Nazi SS soldiers
carrying machine guns. "Raus, raus!" ("Out, out!") they screamed at the
frightened and bewildered Jews, who hurried out the doors under a rain of
cudgel blows and past the snapping, barking jaws of the camp’s German
Shepherds. The air was thick with the deafening and confusing sound of orders
being screamed, dogs barking, and the stench of burning flesh and hair that
spewed from the smokestacks of the camp’s 5 crematoria 24 hours a day. Families
were separated immediately, with the males forming one line and the females
forming another. Most victims were unaware that this was the last time that
they would see their loved ones alive, unaware of their lost opportunity to say
last good-byes.

The SS troops marched the doomed prisoners to the head of the ramp onto which
they had exited. They were led before an SS officer who, in the midst of all
the madness, agony and death, seemed very out of place. His handsome face was
set with a kind smile, his uniform impeccably tailored, cleaned and pressed. He
was cheerfully whistling an opera tune, one of his favorites by Wagner. His
eyes betrayed nothing but a cursory interest in the drama that was unfolding
before him, the drama of which he alone was the chief architect. He carried a
riding crop, but rather than using it to strike the prisoners as they passed
before him, he merely used it to indicate which direction he selected them to
go in, links oder rechts, left or right. Unbeknownst to the prisoners, this
charming and handsome officer with the innocuous demeanor was engaging in his
favorite activity at Auschwitz, selecting which new arrivals were fit to work
and which ones should be sent immediately to the gas chambers and crematorium.
Those sent to the left, roughly 10 to 30 percent of all new arrivals, had their
lives spared, at least for the moment. Those sent to the right, usually 70 to
90 percent of all new arrivals, had been condemned to die without even a
passing glance from their judge and jury at Auschwitz. The handsome officer who
held omnipotent sway over the fate of all the camp’s prisoners was Dr. Josef
Mengele, the Angel of Death.
