Your summertime vacation plans

18.06.07, 00:36
Greetings, greetings and salutations! smile))
I haven't visited this forum in a while, so today I popped in and what do I
see? A significant drop off in the number of posts. In the past I was an avid
reader of this forum so I thought that perhaps we could shake things up by
posting our vacation plans for the Summer/ or wishes for the ones who
don't/can't have a time off.

Well, I'll begin. In July I'll be visiting eastern Poland (Bialowieza) and the
Danish island of Bornholm.

So, what are your plans?

I'm going to the Vosges region of France, for about eight days. Staying in
Colmar. Hope to see the Black Forest area and Strasbourg also.
      • chris-joe Re: Your summertime vacation plans 19.06.07, 21:16
Brazil. Again. And while at it, will hop across the border to pay a 10-day
visit in my fave city- Buenos Aires.
        Sadly, not before September...
      • marcus_anglikiem Re: Your summertime vacation plans 16.07.07, 22:16
Hey, Dave! Hope you are well. I don't know where the Vosges is (despite having
been to France about twelve times) Though if you are heading towards
Strasbourg, i can recommend the Ardennes.
As for my holiday plans, my fiancée and I are going to Vilnius in August for
her cousin's wedding, we'll be there 11 days, and before that i'll be in
Warszawa for two days - hey, that's where you live, right? I'll be staying with
Alina's sister and sister's husband in Skierniewice and intend to explore Wola,
Bemowo, Ząbki, Bielany and Żoliborz. Maybe we could meet for a kufel of Tyskie?
I finally got a full-time job a month or so ago, working for forklift truck firm
Linde (2nd biggest in the world, not far off the biggest, Toyota). Linde are in
Poland too, yes? (hmm, that could be useful in the futuresmile )
What have you been up to lately? (it seems a lot of people are returning at
this time to FLiP after an absence of some time)
        • marcus_anglikiem Re: Warszawa-Vilnius railway 16.07.07, 22:21
has anyone here taken the Warszawa<>Vilnius train? I'm using that route in
August so i'd be interested to hear anyone else's experiences.
          • chris-joe Re: Warszawa-Vilnius railway 18.07.07, 21:41
            By Jove, I did!
However, that was in the early spring of 1991, shortly after the TV Tower
massacre. The Vilnius parliament was baricaded, as was most of the city center,
in anticipation of a full-out Soviet invasion. The scene repeated in Riga and
            Tallinn.
As a freshly minted Canadian I refused to share my carton of Marlboros with the
Soviet custom officer. Shocked and confused by my unexpected act of defiance he
went speechless, left the compartment and... that was that. (The look in his
            eyes: priceless.)
But then again, I could afford my 'misbehavin' as I probably was the only one on
the train not trying to smuggle something. My sputniks from the compartment, at
first horrified, were elated- their baggage was left unchecked.

I could go on, but all this would be slighly outdated and not that useful for
the preparation of your trip, I fear smile
            • marcus_anglikiem Re: Warszawa-Vilnius railway 18.07.07, 22:24
outdated perhaps, but thanks for the story! if you'd like to add more of your
experience of that trip i'd really appreciate the read. I always felt i'd
arrived 'a little late' - my first trip over the then former east/west line
being as late as 2000 - and it's amazing how quickly things changed, in the
early '90s - i visited Tarnów (a beautiful town of approx. 100,000 people, not
far from Kraków) in 2000. I once not long ago saw a picture of a building on
the town square, it looked like a photo from the WWII era. I was simply amazed
to discover this photo was taken in 1991. Of course that's an extreme example,
but interesting nonetheless. I guess it just shows that back then there hadn't
been - for several decades - enough money around to fritter on the municipal
renovation projects that we see today with smoothly plastered and freshly
bright painted walls and polished fixtures and fittings. In my reading I find
myself drawn to the former 'Eastern' Europe in the post-war period, in
particular Poland and the former East Germany. PS. If you want to read a book
which you will remember as one of the best you've ever found, read Girl Nobody
(original title: Panna Nikt) by Tomek Tryzna . regards, Marcus.

he Vosges is right by Strasbourg, and I will be putting up pn
YouTube some of the footage I shot there. I have put up some footage
of Kaysersberg today which shows the typical atmosphere of the area.

It is great that people are coming back. I hope we will have a lot
of people back and new people too and let this become the great and
helpful community that it promised to be earlier on.

I will spend my holiday in Kuźnica [Hel]. It's a beautiful strip of land with
sea on both sides. And ain't so crowdy as Hel, Jastarnia etc.

          I think we really should.
But that will only happen if the most disgusting actions by maggie ( from
"English Only" forum) stop immediately. I am being told she is the reason why
Kylie left Dave's forum when she found out her messages to varsovian went
missing - not once, but twice. Coincidence? I think not. Only someone working
for Agora has the liberty to pull this off. She had better know, it's a
deceitful and dirty thing to do. Shame on her!

Maggie, jealous about Dave's forum? Don't like Dave? Or is it because your own
sorry little forum looks pretty sad?

Take my advice, don't abuse your privileges, keep to your own despicable flock
of Agora trash and stay OUT !!!!!!!!!!

For more interesting info regarding Agora/Gazeta forums, have someone translate
a few things for you from:

For the record, I have no beef against Maggie, and I always liked her myself,
but I didn't agree with her view that I should censor the forum more. I did do
so at one point, but that basically became the turning point and this forum has
never again gotten back to the levels of activity there used to be.

I allowed Waldek back on, and so Maggie then stopped participating here, but I
never said she shouldn't participate. For me, everyone is welcome to
participate as long as they discuss and don't just spam the place and as long
as they stay within reasonable guidelines.

Quite a few friendships were made on this forum, and now that everything
appears to have died the death I am quite sad about it. Maybe we can ignite the
flames and get it going again, but the run rate in the last 12 months has only
been one twelfth of what it was before that.

It's understandable enough. I'd have used the present continuous "I'm still
learning", but it doesn't matter in a discussion.
    • ja_karola Re: Your summertime vacation plans 11.07.07, 20:18
      Greetings to all!
I too haven't had a peek in here for a while, but I've been meaning to for a
long time. To get back to the topic of discussion, my summer vacation will not
be all that exciting this year I fear... The original plan was to go to Italy
for an intensive Italian course including sightseeing, tours, etc....all in Italian.
Fortunately (and not), I bought a property in PL and will have to spend some
time there taking care of business. If I'm lucky I'll squeeze in some R&R on
      the Baltic beaches.

As for the drop in readership and participation, whatever happened to Marimax
and his pinko insults? Is he still around? Things are always quiet over the
holidays... I will surely come back on a more regular basis now that my life is
      somewhat back in order...

I look forward to seeing more happening here... Uncle Dave, you rock! This
      forum ain't going down...not yet!

that's an excellent rate on that Greece flight. I don't think it would get me

Brutt, i haven't noticed you before on FLiP, though i think you mentioned you'd

        Hey Marcus and all FLIP-ers,
Yes, my previous contribution to this forum was very brief. Nevertheless, I was
        an avid reader.

Regarding your question about the train to Vilnius (I hope that this info isn't
too late): There are PKP buses that run twice a day from Białystok directly to
Vilnius. The PKP bus stop is right in front of the Białystok PKP station.
Unfortunately, I don't remember the schedule but I am sure you can find it
online. There are several daily trains from Warsaw to Białystok (2.5 hrs). Also,
I am certain that Suwałki has good travel connections to Vilnius. The reason I
am writing this is that during my recent stay in PL, we made a short weekend
trip to Druskinniki. That's how I learned about these alternative routes to
        Lithuania.

I hope that you have a pleasant trip.

          Thank you, Brutt,
We shall be travelling on the W-wa - Vilnius direct train ( one of
the reasons i'm flying to W-wa, apart from the fact that i love the
city, is that it's so much cheaper to fly to W-wa than to Vilnius )
          So,how was Białowieża? Bornholm? Druskinkai?
