a job question

11.07.07, 21:22
Hi everybody!
What would be the best way to find a job in Poland as a foreigner? Anywhere
in Poland though better in the Kraków area. I'm a software developer
especially oriented to web developing. It would be great to work on what I do
but any job which would let me stay in Poland would be good. I've thought
about teaching spanish as a possiblity as well.
Is it possibile to find a job there if I'm not EU resident?

Any advice or even contact info would be immensely grateful.

What particular web skills do you have?

Could you write me a really good rankings site for real estate companies
through the EU? Or a really good property sales site that could span the EU and
contain google map, photo storage and forum elements and be fully web 2.0?

I own www.placefor.eu and I would like something good to put on it

Regulations change over time and I'm possibly a little out of date, but the most
important thing to remember is that you can't work (legally) without a visa with
a work permit and you can only obtain the first visa with work permit in your
home country (read that sentence over and commit it to memory). So you have to
get the job (including visa from Polish consulate) before you arrive in Poland
or be prepared to come to Poland, job hunt, then go back home to wait for your visa.

Also, don't assume that information you get from Polish consular employees is
accurate. The staff at Polish consulates and embassies are often very
misinformed on current regulations (I have a horror story or two ...).

Check the websites for your country's embassy in Poland and the Polish embassy
in your country for more info. You might also check to see if the foreigners
office in the city you want to go to has a web page in English/Spanish.

Working in the software field might be difficult as you'd probably need to be
      pretty fluent in Polish.

Teaching foreign languages is often the easiest way to get your foot into the
country and the regulations for teaching (especially at higher education
institutions) are more lax. If you're cuban-american (wild guess from your
address-name) you might send your cv to state universities as a Spanish-English
      teacher (if you're bilingual).

Universities have no central employment offices (and communication between
departments is often minimal) and so you'd need to send it to various
departments (English philology, Spanish philology, Glottodidactics, Applied
linguistics etc). If you have any contacts at all in Poland be prepared to work
      them (it's the Polish way).

To be on the safe side, it's probably a good bet to restrict your search to
state institutions (private institutions are very much a hit and miss affair and
foreigner offices usually treat employees of state institutions more nicely).

Also note that engineering/computer science are taught at university level at
polytechnics (or technical unversity) and that medical and agricultural
universities are generally seperate institutions from 'general' universities.
