U.S. Rebukes Sharon,

HEBRON, West Bank (Reuters)
The United States directed a rare public rebuke
at Ariel Sharon on Friday after the Israeli prime
minister warned Washington not to appease Arab
states, and fresh fighting left five Palestinians dead.

Sharon's staff issued conciliatory statements
after a U.S. spokesman condemned comments
in which the Israeli leader drew a comparison
with the appeasement of the Nazis in 1938.

Israel, Sharon said, would not accept the fate of Czechoslovakia,
sacrificed by the West in 1938 for the sake of a short-lived peace
with Nazi Germany.

The White House on Friday slammed the comments
as ''unacceptable.''
President Bush's spokesman, Ari Fleischer, told reporters
the U.S. view had been communicated to Sharon through
the U.S. Embassy in Israel and the National Security Council.
