      Lapidus, gratulacje.

        Dear Lapidus

        Real linguistic jewels.
Do you recall similar comments I had, citing Kaska from Passaic?
Are we looking at the same language evolution process?

Gdzie jest Smutas gdy trzeba bronic dziejowej koniecznosci przenikania angielskiego do jezyka Jerzego Urbana?

Cos sie mnie tak uczepil? Potrzebujesz jakies wsparcie by utwierdzic sie w swojej slusznosci?

Lapidus znalazl swietne przyklady skretynienia. Wielkie brawa!

@republican: the poor girl really got under your skin, hasn't she? ;)

anyway, if you fancy reading about the evolution of language i thoroughly recommend The Unfolding of Language by Guy Deutscher.

from a review: A brilliant and original exploration of how languages evolve and have evolved, comparable to Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct in its accessibility, wit and ambition.

"* "A highly original study of the evolution of language... A brilliant solution to a quandary that has puzzled people for many centuries... If [the] decay and simplification [of language] are constant and universal...how did...regular and complex languages come to exist in the first place? Deutscher's chosen task is to unravel that paradox, and he does so brilliantly, withholding the secret with great skill. If I told you how it works, you wouldn't buy the book. Suffice to say his explanation is both clever and convincing... this book will stretch your mind' Independent on Sunday
      * "He really ought to be read...by anyone who persists in complaining that the English language is going to the dogs...interesting and substantial" - Nicholas Bagnal, Sunday Telegraph * 'Powerful and thrilling.' Spectator

        • lapidus1 Re: do kolekcji 08.05.11, 21:48
Verbosa? Haha (hollow laughter), guilty! Sadly, being able to be brief and clear is still a challenge.

I disagree about contradicting myself here. (Although I'm only guessing at what you mean - you linked to a very long post).

I'm all in favour of freedom of speech. It doesn't mean that I agree with every view put forward when people exercise their freedom of speech.

I recognise that changes in language are part of a continuous and complex process (definitely not just a modern plague). It doesn't mean that I approve of everything this process can and does throw up.

          ........

P.S. It's one thing to say 'zbijamy ceny' (ugh) but to turn it into 'zabijamy ceny' is a rubbish idea. Next, to turn it into 'kilujemy ceny' is hardly a vote winner.
Although when I googled 'kiluj' I realised (or realized, as it's becoming popular) that it's quite normal in computer speak to 'kill' an application or something. So maybe IT people do use 'kiluj' in Polish the same way we say 'kliknij'? So ... who knows? (in IT, not in retail!)

P.P.S. Gender, thats another interesting word. I take it you use it in its post-1955 meanining (widespread since the 1970s) but not post-1993 meaning? ;D

Yes in specialized area of computer communication.
Unfortunately rights to these patents have been assigned to my ex-employer.

Oh! I had no idea companies could do this. I hope they didn't take you by surprise and the rules were made clear to you from the outset. Otherwise it's as if being good at something is not enough - you need to have a team of lawyers/business guru to back you up.

Anyway, ex-employers belong in the past, especially bad ones. You move on, dig an escape tunnel if you have to, but you move on - older, wiser, free to enjoy your life :)

One needs to spend about $5000 to obtain a Patent.
The company pays and the inventor gets $750 award plus diploma suitable for framing.
It looks good on Resume (you Brits call it CV).
One can also brag about it on Gazeta Polska Forum.

It is not the matter of invention, just simple standardization.
You can change traffic in Great Britain to the right, just for starters.
