IP: *.w81-248.abo.wanadoo.fr 16.05.04, 18:28
I'm considering ____ to take or taking____ a trip to Canada next summer.

We are considering ____to buy or buying____an automobile.

They are considering _____to hold or holding____ the classes in the evening
instead of the morning.

Powinnam uzyc gerunda ( czyli -ing ), ale zbila mnie z tropu regula, w ktorej
pisza iz w ang. niepoprawnie jest uzywac -ing po -ing.
(I'm beginning anderstanding.) A jak to sie ma to tych powyzszych zdan ?

      The 'ing' is correct here.
The first 'ing' is a verb, the other - a noun.

Można użyć w czasie continuous formy ciągłej czasownika - ale do tego zdania
przyczepiłbym się z innej strony: merytorycznie! Tzn.: czasownik 'consider'
jest zaliczany do grupy 'mental activity' czyli czasowników tzw. 'stative
verbs'. Ich specyfika polega na tym, że nie tworzą one czasów typu continuous.
Podobnie jak 'know', ' think', etc. ... Tak więc nie powinnaś mieć tu problemu
z podwójnym ing-iem bo powinien być tylko jeden: I consider!!!

I am thinking about what you wrote, and I don't agree
that one cannot say "I am thinking"

You can say "I am thinking, I've been thinking, I was thinking". It's correct.
Don't learn such rules, learn the language, Read books and you'll see such forms
        are quite common.

Ok, I'm a language purist. I know the grammar rules and I try to write and
speak correct - but I know such a construction like "I'm thinking". That's
obvious that this structure exists in spoken English and even in written but I
was shocked this absurd rule that after -ing you can't use -ing and I was
trying to make it clear that in this case we can use -ing. I know that grammar
books say one thing and people say another thing. I was trying to show how in
this case we should say from a grammar point of view. But I agree that
constructions like "I'm thinking" are very common despite grammatical rules.

This rule about stative verbs is well-known and obvious. But the difference
between "I think" and "I'm thinking" is following:
          >> I think you're right. <<
          >> We are thinking of going to the cinema. <<
In the first case you deal with 'think'as an opinion and in the second
case 'think' exists as a kind of activity - mental activity. In this case is
          correct. That says grammar.

There's a similar difference between consider and considering:

            1. I consider that decision to be a mistake = this is my opinion about it
            [uważam]
            2. I'm considering moving to Paris = That's an interesting idea and I can't
            stop thinking about it. [rozważam]
