wszędzie widzę tylko FRIENDS, a przeciez nie wszyscy są moimi przyjaciołmi-

chicken is right again, however it is pretty essential to know how to
differentiate all these terms and how to use them right:
acquaintance- to tyle co (niezbyt bliski) znajomy
close acquaintance- dobry znajomy
chum, pal, mate, buddy- to kumpel; zwrot czesto uzywany jednak takze w
odniesieniu do nieznajomych, troche poufale (przy piwie w barze), czasem
obrazliwie (listen you, pal= sluchaj no facet)
friend- zaleznie od kontekstu moze oznaczac praktycznie kazde z powyzszych, od
bliskiego przyjaciela po znajomka.

oh, I forgot to add that chum, pal, mate, buddy are rather gender specific and
refer to male friends (maybe except "pal"- "she's my pal"; "she/he is a pal"-
on/a to rowny gosc").
Girls call one another "girlfriend" as far as I know :) Any girls here to
clarify this?

"She's my mate", "I'm going out to see my mate", "Me and my mates" - in the
Scouseland a girl about her girlfriend(s)

PS: Substitute "my" with "me" and you will get a better "picture" ;)

a friend is a very vast term, could be kolega, kumpel etc, but if you really
want to stress that the person is your "przyjaciel" then you would say 'best
friend'.

How about: fellow and chum?
Also, girlfriend does not necessarily mean a girl that is your date, saying
that "I have a girlfriend" also means "mam przyjacólkę".

In the UK girls frequently use "mate" for a girlfriend as deadeasy noticed.
It's used not only in Scouse in my opinion.
But I don't think they use it in a way men usually do referring to a stranger.
