That'll be plenty... only I can't remember all of them now :)

flabbergasted is one of them, OK,
and diurnal, too, cause I was once afraid of that word, having no idea how to
      pronounce it.
I like 'stance' (very useful), and 'incidentally'.
      I can't say I don't like twat, either :).

Incidentally, (sic!) I happened to fall in love with a word "fuckass". Donnie Darko fans out there will know what I refer to.. ;) Anyway, all lines in the scene is absolutely hysterical. I laughed my <insert body part> off.

'Equally', esp. in 'but, equally...' is by far my favourite one.
and a bunch o foreign words or phrases that impart some (admittedly,
artificial) learnedness without being too pretentious, like e.g. 'bona fide'
        or 'per se'.

        • jan.kulczyk Re: Your favourite English words? 01.01.05, 19:13
Speaking of "bona fide", the dialogue between George Clooney's convict character and his wife and daughter in Coens' "Brother Where Art Thou" absolutely blew me away.

          - "I am the only daddy you got. I am the damn pater familias."
          - "But you ain't bona fide."

          and later

          - "Vernon's got prospects.|He's bona fide. What are you?"
          - "I'll tell you what I am...I'm the pater familias,|and you can't marry him!"

        Several to kilka.

Mnie brakuje za to słów "kilkanaście" i "kilkadziesiąt" w angielskim.
Dozen jest wieloznaczny, dozen or so niezgrabny a several dozen w ogóle od czapy.

          kilkadziesiat - tens of ...

I beg to differ. Tens of isn't bad. I forgot to mention this. Still, it's not so neat as kilkadziesiat. But over ten is just plain dumb. 17 is over ten and 235403 is over ten too. Where's the logic?
            • Gość: bez czepialstwa Re: Your favourite English words? IP: *.neoplus.adsl.tpnet.pl 10.01.05, 12:57
and "235430 of sth" is "23543 tens of sth",
the logic is where something becomes accustomed in language, innit?
