po pierwsze, to zdanie brzmialoby lepiej tak "the other girls ARE in the
backyard". "rest of the milk", albo "rest of the family" but not "rest of the
        girls".

po drugie, nie moge sie nadziwic jak czesto rodowici kanadyjczycy uzywaja
czasownika "is" w sytuacji gdy mowa jest o wiecej niz jednej rzeczy - "there is
problems"! takie oczywiste nieporadnosci slychac nawet w radiu cbc gdzie
        standardy jezykowe sa bardzo wysokie.

czy to samo zauwazacie w innnych krajach angielskojezycznych?

To ze uzywamy w Kanadzie IS dla liczby mnogiej (there's lots of things to do)
jest czystym kollokwializmem. Ja tam uzywam w mowie potocznej i sie nie
martwie. Problem jest w tym ze jak chcemy byc bardzo poprawni gramatycznie to
          zaczniemy brzmiec jak podreczniki :)
Natomiast nie powinno byc takich "kwiatkow" w mowie formalnej (media)

"The rest of the girls" sounds OK to me -"the rest" meaning "the remainder". I
am sure her sentence is a continuation of a previous thought. "The rest" can be
used with both countable and uncountable nouns. :)

Sure, there's lots of people who say 'Where's your keys?' etc in England.
If you can't beat them, join them. :)

      IS !!!

ponieważ odnosi się nie do girls (plural)tylko do REST (noun , singular)

When you use a collective noun, it may be followed by either a singular or
plural verb, depending on whether you are thinking of the group as a unit, in
which case it will be singular, or as a number of individuals, in which case it
        will be plural:

My family consists of me, my two brothers and my mum.
Before the recession, my brother's family were quite well off, but now they are
        hard up.
The government has said it will give more money to hospitals and schools.
The government are determined not to let their popularity with the voters slip.
The class was / were good academically, but the football team was /were well
        beaten.
The BBC is / are planning to introduce 35 minute news broadcasts in the spring.
The British Council have / has offices in over a hundred countries worldwide.

          Ms Jones,

          excellent explanation. Nothing to add.
There's some remarks :), however, on "there is",
firstly, it seems, it's only used in the contracted form when followed by a
          plural form ("there's").
secondly, it's getting more and more popular and can be increasingly heard from
          educated native speakers.

            > excellent explanation.
Yes, they do explain things well on Learning English pages (BBC), don't they?
Sorry, I should have made clear where the information is from, even though I do
a sterling job cutting and pasting...:)
About 'there's + plural': I've entered "there's many" into google and got
135 000 hits, "there is many" produced surprisingly high 85 500.

Roger Woodham makes some other points that might be worth noting:

            people / police / cattle

These collective nouns always take a plural verb. There is no singular form of
            these nouns:

People who have invested all their savings in shares are sure to lose out.

Police in this area are currently investigating 74 allegations of date rape.

All the cattle were moved to the fields lower down the valley as winter
            approached.

            a / each / every / this / that team

When collective nouns are used with singular determiners, such as those above,
singular verbs and pronouns are the norm:

That team is capable of winning all the major trophies this year.

A team of inspectors from Scotland Yard is visiting the island this week.

Every family that receives income support will be means-tested.

A government which fails to honour its promises should not be re-elected.

I can also remember Steven Pinker (1994) claiming that
"my bank are terrible" doesn't look quite correct to Americans, though it is
      fully correct in BrE.

As to the google test, remember that "there is many" subsumes such stretches of
text as "Is that all THERE IS? MANY people do not think so".
I do not dispute the conclusion, though (but still you need to be careful with
      google tests).
