I think the best way to learn English is to go to a country where English is
the first language ie. England, USA or Canada. In this way, you will have no
choice but be exposed to English everywhere you go. Just listening to people
talk will get your "ear" accustomed to hearing English. In addition, try not
to live in an area where people speak your native language, because you will be
      more likely to speak it.

Hard work and nothing else. That's the only way to learn a foreign language.

If you know English quite well, you can work on your own (grammar, vocabulary,
      listening, reading).
Find a native speaking (speaking and writing - you can't learn it on your own).

Read literature (and learn new words). There many abridged books available (on
      different word-levels).

It's not a hard work it's rather fun.
Make it easy. Get your grammar basics and listen to the radio.
Since there is no picture your attention is undivided.
Within three months you should see a significant progress.
You'll begin to understand the conversation.
The best way to aquire the vocabulary is to read english short stories.
For a while stay away from newspapers.

Good luck and remember always make it fun

I had a very good English Teacher at high school, but it was not enough,
because I was scared to speak. Now I live in England and passed all the exams
and started studying computers. It was much easier to learn having everyday
contact with English it helped and a big plus was working with children, a lot
of reading for them, and repiting answers for their questions and asking them
many times to do sth. Listening to the radio is a good idea, reading
newspaper , because you have contact with a common Englich not with very
sophisticated like in classical literature. Try not to live with other polish
speaking people because it is an obstacle and don't be afraid to speak and even
think in English or write a diary about what have you done today , about your
      impressions and fillings. Good luck.

I like this idea about write a diary. Im wondering how many minutes or h?
have you learnt everdy day. Did yoy have any daily or weekly routine?
How did you improve your pronauns?

        • ozpol Re: The best way to learn English. 15.08.02, 06:15
In learning any languege the writting is the hardest.
You must write a lot to improve and have some grammar checker to help you.
Speaking is second and reading is easiest.
Write a lot and it is up to you how much and talk a lot or record youself and
          verify.
Hard work or time will help you.
May last teacher told me - when you reach high level of English your
improvement will be harder and harder to notice.

Well in my opinion the most important thing about English is speaking. Of
course others like grammar, reading and writing are important too but not us
much us speaking. So I suggest you speaking. I know that practicing it is
really hard, just because you need onother person. But you have a few options.
For example try to talk to your friends and who knows? They may agree. And
something totaly new (at least for me):) Try www.paltalk.com. If you have a
microphone you can talk to other ppl. There are special rooms for ppl who learn
English. There are also right ppl(teachers) who will surely help you.
Unfortunatly like every program, this one also has some cons. Anyway I thing
its usefull and it will improve your spoken English.

Martyna, the more practice the better. If you want to learn the language well,
make it a part of your life as much as possible. It may not be that easy if you
are not in an English speaking country, but with a little effort you can do it.
One tip from me, to practice speaking I used to talk to myself in English…. It
      is a good exercise :o)
      good luck :o)

GREAT! that's the best way to practice not only speaking.
I always told my student to speak as much as possible. after watching a tv
programme or a film, tell it in your own words, look outside your window and
say what you see, on your way to school, work, say (think) in English what you
see, what people are doing, describe things, places, people and their
behaviour, in the evening you can recollect your day, have an imaginery friend
to talk about your interests, when you have some new vocabulary to learn, try
to come up with a story, using the new words. there are plenty of ideas, just
use your imagination. it's easy, and it works.

If you are English teacher do you have any advice how to learn gramar for
example 1 h per day is ok. I learn 1 h per day but I dont see efects as in the
begining I saw improvment really fast.

By I hope hear from you soon

if your problem is grammar there are two ways to cope with it.
            1. get a teacher who will guide you and work with you to correct mistakes you
            make.
            2. if you feel good enough to help yourself, get a good grammar book with
exercises and key, and simply WRITE down every single exercise, then check it.
analyse your mistakes, get back to the exercises you have already done after
some time. an hour a day would be good.

            good luck

I am of the same opinion, it is harder to fix what you learned wrong that learn
            it correctly from scratch.

I wonder that you expect such a plain advice. Methods which are optimal for an
one individual might be improper for another one. I'm seeking for any advices
as well but rather not such a literal.

            Good luck :)

I just learned at school. I began in 1 grade of primary school. It`s the best
time. And then i continued in high school. I went to a school with lingwistic
class. On holidays, I were improving my skills on foreign courses, in London
and Dublin. Although I never passed CAE or CPE (i wasn`t interested in it), i
      know English quite well.

Amen, to whatever has been said so far...plus...for heaven's sake! avoid all
      these "cause"s, "ppl"s, "thnx"s, "u"s "4"s and whatever IRC-like kind of
writing people have been using on this forum. I am still trying to figure out
their point...unsucessfully. Using of this kind of abbreviations looks a little
bit awkward to me especially, when it comes to non-native speakers, and it can
additionally turn into the habit, which is bad enough.

If you have a computer at home (and I guess you have) try learning by playing
computer games, especially 'adventures'. Get yourself some old games where
dialogues, not graphics are most important and go for it. You'll have some fun,
too. I learnt much of my vocabulary playing those kinds of games. I didn't know
it then, but now I realise that it helped me a great deal. Good luck...

I'd agree, games are great. So is the net - but, surf the English sites, not
        the Polish ones!

Speaki in English when you can.

          Hi !

This is very intersting discussion. Everybody has so much to share.
I think that you know English Language very well. It is good that you are looking for improvement.

For grammar the best are exercises, but important ia also to have correct answers for all the questions.

Do not go to England without money, work is OK, but it could force you to take first available job

Have fun, listen to the music and try to watch original movies (films) without transation to the Polish
          Language.

Be careful there is a difference between English & American 'English' Language.

          Good luck.

          Sincerely,

          Aleks

          P.S.
          To all of you:
          Nobody is perfect.
