Well, here is the latest good news from Poland, for those who do not live
here. It seems that our economy after being in dire straits for so long,
according to our government optimistic predictions at last is going to turn
around. Our farmers have begun raising cats and dogs for food and, straight
from the horse’s mouth, they intend selling it (the food) not only in Poland
but also to the Far East and hopefully the USA. The article comes from New
Warsaw Express www.nwe.com.pl. Enjoy.
Full of Eastern Promise
Police in the Nowy Dwor area near Warsaw uncovered an illegal slaughterhouse
that butchered cats and dogs to sell the meat to fast-food booths and
restaurant owners in the capital. The meat was mainly used as filler to
ground-meat products, such as the popular “sajgonki” spring rolls, or as a
stand-in for pork or veal.
According to an investigation by news channel TVN24 and the daily Zycie
Warszawy, the operation was run by a group of Vietnamese immigrants.
Officials arrested one suspect after a raid on the shed, where they
discovered a rusty refrigerator full of animal carcasses, dried blood with
bits of fur on the floor and a chopping block with an axe stuck in it.
According to the daily, dogs were kept in cages and beaten systematically,
while cats would have their backs broken in order to tenderise the meat and
make it come off the bone easier. Local residents, who refused to be named,
said the local economy also benefitted. A dog could be sold to the Vietnamese
for around zl.30. Neighbors would also often steal each other’s animals to
sell them to the butchers, and some farmers raised animals expressly for this
purpose.
In a famous case two years ago, police uncovered several dozen pigeons, all
infected with salmonella and parasites, at a stall at the Stadion
Dziesieciolecia “Russian market”. The birds were being sold to Vietnamese
food booths.
