CAN I CONSIDER MYSELF POLISH?

IP: *.houston.rr.com 10.02.03, 04:58
Both parents Polish, Polish born, fluent in Polish .
BUT
US citizen, spent entire adult life in the US, family (younger siblings, hubby, kids)
speak no Polish, US educated.
I have always considered myself Polish, yet today my own dad told me (on his 70th
birthday, in front of people!) I would not be able to fully comprehend an issue
(personal, long story) because I am too American. I am crushed. Am I Polish?

Are you really?... crushed, I mean?!? And if so, why?... How good a feeling
was that, for somebody living in the US of A? A safety niche?

"always considered myself Polish"... - first of all? foremost? only as far as
      nationalities go?

And now you've been told, you...
"would not be able to fully comprehend an issue
(personal, long story) because I am too American."!!! Gee! Are you sure your
dad wasn't just letting a bit of his own bitterness out?... Seems to me to be
the case. After all, who's to tell wether you are Polish or not? What are the
criteria apart from the obvious, the 'beaurocratic'? C'mon, don't feel crushed!

You are as Polish as you want to be!

On the other hand, to understand some ('personal, long story') issue regarding
family issues of 'long standing' within the Polish 'twisted' context may
require something other than the 'Polish mind'?
What does it mean to be 'too American'? Too narrow minded? or too open minded?

take it easy! it's all... in the mind!

your dad didnt say that you were too American to be Polish, did he? and
besides you still might be Polsih being American...

What's more important she has also lost her national identity which we have
been fighting for so hard. Now imagine that in 25 years or more, after joining
the EU, elderly people in Poland will say to their children in front of other
people: "You are too European to comprehend the issue". Will that be the cause
for despair or perhaps on the contrary - too good to be true. What do you
          think? :)

All right, all right... But answer me just this: what has the bloody Europe

I am not a historian, so I won't answer your question and anyway I don't think it's worth the time. But the more important issue is: what are we going to get from them now? and even more imkportant, what are we going to do once we get it?. And it is what I am scared of.

For once I agree with chcikenShort!
What Europe has done for us?
They (USA) only asking for moral support!
Good old USA don't really care if Europe will join them to get rid of Suddam

                  Ha ha ha...

I was merely ref. to 'Liberation Front of Judea' & its struggle against Roman
oppression! - John Cleese & al. you wallies!... It's Monty Python time!

Personally, I think... for Poland, Europe is much much better than... the
                  other way round.
