Several Air Transat planes temporarily grounded
        CTV.ca News Staff

Air Transat was forced to temporarily ground several of its planes Sunday,
after a rudder on a plane flying to Quebec City from Cuba nearly fell off.

The pilot noticed a problem about 30 minutes after taking off from the airport
in Varadero, Cuba, and turned the plane around, Air Transat spokeswoman Rachel
        Andrews said.

The plane landed safely back at the airport in Cuba, and none of the 261
passengers and nine crew members were injured.

Saturday's incident prompted Air Transat to ground three Airbus planes in
        Toronto and two in Vancouver.

There were some flight delays as the planes were inspected, but no problems
were found and they resumed operation by Sunday evening.

The passengers in Cuba are due to arrive in Quebec City Monday morning aboard
another plane, sent to pick them up.

Meanwhile, an investigation into the incident is continuing.

This incident comes less than a week after Air Transat announced it had reached
a $7.65 million settlement with about 175 passengers that were on the airline's
flight that was forced to make an emergency landing in the Azores in 2001.

The settlement will be presented for court approval April 25.

Air Transat settles with emergency landing passengers
Last Updated Wed, 02 Mar 2005 15:39:30 EST
        CBC News
MONTREAL - Air Transat's insurance companies have agreed to a $7.65 million
settlement with some of the passengers who were onboard flight 236 when it ran
out of fuel over the Atlantic Ocean more than three years ago.

Air Transat said the settlement would be entirely paid by its insurers, not by
the airline or its parent, Transat A.T.

The Air Transat plane on the ground in the Azores
The plane's pilot, Capt. Robert Piche, guided the aircraft on a 20- minute
glide before making an emergency landing in the Azores.

The deal announced Tuesday involves about 175 of the 293 passengers who were on
the Airbus A-330, flying from Toronto to Lisbon on Aug. 24, 2001.

Late last year a group of about 90 passengers accepted a deal from the airline
        that paid them each $12,500.

An investigation found that the fuel leak was caused by an improperly installed
engine. Portuguese investigators blamed the incident on poor maintenance and
        lapses in pilot training.

Although there were no deaths, a number of passengers suffered injuries when
the plane made a hard landing on the runway of a military base in the Azores,
more than 1,400 kilometres short of its destination.

The final settlement is expected to be filed in court in late April.
