      Australia's World XI

Football helped sustain new migrants in a strange land, with a strange tongue,
and even stranger sporting codes, writes Steve Meacham.

GERMAN-born Doris Schwarzer still remembers a conversation she had with her
butcher in western Sydney in the 1980s. He asked what sport her son Mark
played. When she told him soccer - as the game was then called - he
said: "Soccer is for softies. A real man plays football."

By "football", of course, he meant rugby league, or possibly rugby union. And
by "real man", he meant a true-blue Australian. "That was the attitude back
then," says Schwarzer, whose honeymoon was the four-week voyage from Bremen
with her husband, Hans, in 1968. "He probably still thinks it."

Perhaps. But it's likely that same butcher would want to wish her son well.
After all, the saves Mark Schwarzer made as goalkeeper in the penalty shoot-out
against Uruguay last November ensured Australia will be represented at the
World Cup, a sporting carnival arguably even greater than the Olympics.

But it's not just Schwarzer. The 2006 Socceroos are a living embodiment of what
we now call multiculturalism. Look at the surnames of the 23 players named last
week in the squad to go to Germany. Among them Aloisi, Bresciano, Covic, Kalac,
Lazaridis, Popovic, Skoko, Sterjovski, Viduka. True, there are no Asian names,
but surely that is only a matter of time?

As Les Murray - the undisputed voice of Australian football now that his friend
and colleague Johnny Warren is dead - explains: "This Socceroo outfit, by and
large, are the children of migrants, the people who came here in the '50s, '60s
and '70s. And without those migrants, and the way they replanted the seeds of
football in this country, this team would not exist."

Herald football correspondent Michael Cockerill put it beautifully in a column
he wrote that night in November when Australia qualified. "In a multicultural
nation in a fractured world, the Socceroos can bring together the sum of their
parts: Muslim, Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican. German, Lebanese, Polynesian,
Croatian, Italian, Melanesian, Greek. It is a rich tapestry but last night
they - and we - were one thing only. Australian."

Murray, a refugee whose Hungarian parents fled here after the Soviet crackdown
in 1956, is well qualified to talk about the way football helped sustain new
migrants who found themselves in a strange land, with a strange tongue, and
even stranger sporting codes. As an 11-year-old, living in a refugee camp in
Wagga Wagga, Murray remembers being amazed he'd come to a country that wasn't
in love with the 11-man game that had dominated his childhood: "I didn't know
such a place even existed." Later, when he learnt English, he found himself in
playground arguments with "kids who thought rugby league was the most popular
      game in the world".

Murray's reflections on migration and football are among those used in a new
exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum, funded by the NSW Migration Heritage
Centre. The curator, Anni Turnbull, decided to interview the parents of five
Socceroos because, "having curated several sports exhibitions, I realised how
poorly represented soccer has been in our cultural institutions and, frankly,
      our media".

The World Cup dream: stories of Australia's soccer mums and dads opens (at the
      museum and online) on Monday.

The players Turnbull chose represent the broad spectrum of the modern sport.
Four were the children of migrants - Schwarzer, Vince Grella, Jason Culina and
Ahmad Elrich (who was not included in the World Cup squad, to the
disappointment of his Lebanese-born parents). Scott Chipperfield has Australian-
born parents but was included because his distant forebears came from Britain.

"We are a country of migrants," says Turnbull. "We're here because of migration
policy, including British migration." Football has been played competitively in
Australia since 1880, but it never really took root as a mainstream spectator
sport until postwar migrants began arriving from Europe. There were many false
dawns - most notably when the Socceroos qualified for the World Cup for the
first time in 1974. But, in the title of Warren's autobiography, most native-
born Australians dismissed the people who played the game as "wogs, poofs and
      sheilas".

For Branko Culina, Jason's father and a former professional player, playing
football was part assimilation, part survival. He arrived in Melbourne as an 11-
year-old from Croatia. "I can still vividly remember the day we arrived. It was
a Sunday. We went to our uncle's house in Brunswick and in the afternoon we
went to our first football match, Melbourne Croatia versus George Cross.
Football was part of the Australian experience from day one."

Culina has a theory that the Croatian expatriate community in Australia was
bound together by two factors: God and the round ball. "Croatians were a very
close-knit community when we got here. They probably still are, but not to the
same extent. Soccer - or football as we now call it - and the church kept the
      community together."

Croatia was then part of communist Yugoslavia. "In those days if you said you
were from Croatia, people said 'Where?'," Culina says. "Most Croatians left
Yugoslavia because they wanted a better lifestyle and because they wanted
freedom. When they arrived here they found they were able to stay in touch with
each other through soccer and the church."

Did they use their Croatian sports clubs to retain their own culture or to ease
their way into mainstream Australian society? "A bit of both," he says. The
soccer clubs were a way "of keeping an identity, but also searching for an
      identity, for acceptance".

Up to seven players of Croatian ancestry were in the running for the Socceroo
squad. Another three were born here, but have opted to play for Croatia, adding
spice to the fact that Australia and Croatia have been drawn to play each other.

"We've got friends and relatives, both here and in Croatia, who are looking
forward with great anticipation to this game," Culina says. "But there are no
divided loyalties. Our loyalties are with Australia and with our son."

Antonio and Maria Grella will also be proudly wearing Socceroo jerseys in
Germany as they watch "Vincenzo", the most famous of their three football-
playing sons. "There will be no Grellas in Australia," says Maria. The entire
family is heading to the World Cup, for their first-ever holiday together.

Neither Antonio nor Maria spoke English when they arrived as children from
Italy in the 1960s. Most of their social life centred around the strong Italian
expatriate community in Melbourne's Richmond. And football was a major plank of
      that community.

Even as an 11-year-old Vince's dream was to play for Australia, not Italy -
even though fulfilling that dream meant having to leave Australia.

Maria, in particular, remembers the anguish when Vince left Canberra Cosmos as
an 18-year-old to test his talent in Italy's ultra-competitive Serie A league,
initially for Empoli. "It was hard for us, and hard for him. He was very
lonely." But now that he plays for Parma, one of Italy's best clubs, both
parents feel the family sacrifice was worth it.

Murray has a theory that the migrants who relied on football the most were
those who found it hardest to fit into mainstream Australia. "Different ethnic
clubs disappeared at varying speeds. The earliest clubs to die were the Dutch
clubs and the German clubs because they

Murray has a theory that the migrants who relied on football the most were
those who found it hardest to fit into mainstream Australia. "Different ethnic
clubs disappeared at varying speeds. The earliest clubs to die were the Dutch
clubs and the German clubs because they assimilated quicker. The Hungarian
        clubs also disappeared quite quickly.

"The Croatians had a political axe to grind. Their clubs were a political
statement against the nasty regime in Belgrade. Once Croatia became
independent, interest in following that club largely fell away."

But he recalls with affection his early years in Australia. "That weekend break
of a couple of hours watching a team called Budapest was a nice relief from the
hostilities. Because you were there with your own mob, who spoke the same
language, ate the same food. So it was being back in your homeland for a brief
        period.

"That's why migrants formed football clubs around the country. They simply had
        to."

A HINT OF TUSSLES TO COME
DALE CHIPPERFIELD was surprised to find a couple of Swiss backpackers had made
a special detour to see Wollongong a couple of years ago. They were fans of FC
Basle on a world trip, and they were desperate to visit the childhood stamping
        ground of their midfield star.

Though he has been capped almost 50 times, Chipperfield's son, Scott, has
hardly been a household name in Australia - a situation that is likely to
change over the next few weeks.

Yet it speaks volumes for the Socceroo diaspora that a lad who learned his
skills in the Illawarra, driving a school bus every morning before training as
a way of supplementing his semi-professional income, should be feted in Europe
and largely ignored in his homeland.

His mother, who lives at Corrimal, will be travelling to Germany to watch her
son in action - and to catch up with her two-year-old grandson, Liam.

"Scott bought Liam a soccer ball before he was even born," says Chipperfield.
But there is one problem she sees on the horizon.

Liam has a Swiss-born mother, Stefanie, and, as Chipperfield says, that
means "Liam can play for either Switzerland or Australia. We'll have to see who
        wins out."

Joy echoes at discovery that Jenolan Caves are world's oldest
      Deborah Smith Science Editor
      July 26, 2006

THE Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains have been dated at 340 million years
old, making them the oldest known open caves in the world.

In a five-year study, a team of Australian scientists tested clay from caves
regularly visited by tourists, such as the Orient Cave and Temple of Baal Cave,
      to determine their ancient origins.

Team member, ArmstrongOsborne, of the University of Sydney, said it had been
thought for many years that the limestone caves were only a few thousand years
      old.

Then, about six years ago, geologists estimated they could have formed as long
      as 100 million years ago.

The new finding was a shock.

"The dates we got are much older than anticipated. It is quite dramatic," Dr
      Osborne said.

The second oldest known open cave is in the Guadelupe Mountains in New Mexico,
US, which is 65 million years old. Most other famous caves, such as Postojna
Cave in Slovenia, are thought to be only about 5 million years old, he said.

For the study, CSIRO scientists, led by Dr Horst Zwingmann, used a method they
had developed to help oil exploration companies find oil deposits. By testing
minerals in mud samples from the floors of the caves at Jenolan, they were able
to show that the clay had formed in the distant past from ash blown in from a
      nearby volcano.

Dr Osborne said 340 million years was a long time, even in geological
terms. "To put it in context, the Blue Mountains began to form 100 million
years ago; dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago and Tasmania was
joined to the mainland as recently as 10,000 years ago."

He said the discovery, published in the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences,
could assist in a push for Jenolan Caves to gain world heritage listing in
their own right, not just as part of the Blue Mountains listing.

"They deserve it. They are one of the world's most complicated cave systems,"
      he said.

Most ancient caves around the world have filled up with rock, and are no longer
      accessible, Dr Osborne said.

Try this quiz - English only
Stephanie Peatling, Barney Zwartz and Adele Horin
      September 18, 2006

PEOPLE wanting to become Australian citizens will have to pass an English test
and another 45-minute quiz of up to 30 questions testing knowledge on
everything from the judiciary to indigenous people.

Potential citizens could also be asked to sign a pledge of commitment as part
of the Howard Government's toughening of citizenship requirements. The pledge
could include expressions of loyalty to the nation, its laws and system of
      government.

But Islamic leaders yesterday accused the Government of preparing to use
Muslims and the Australian values debate as "the new Tampa" to win next year's
      federal election.

Andrew Robb, the parliamentary secretary for immigration and multicultural
affairs, said citizenship was a privilege that "gives us our identity".

"It tells us who we are [and] where we fit in the world. It is a unifying force
in Australia and if we give it away like confetti it is not valued."

Hass Dellal, the executive director of the Australian Multicultural Foundation,
said as long as it was clear the test applied to all migrants, and not just
Muslims, it could lead to a better understanding of Australia, and give
migrants more time to learn English.

But at a weekend conference in Sydney, the first nationwide gathering of imams,
several Islamic leaders who did not want to be named described the Government's
moves on citizenship as "the new Tampa", a reference to the uproar over boat
people that preceded the 2001 election.

Publicly, the leaders criticised Mr Robb's speech to the conference, in which
he urged Islamic clerics to conduct more services in English to warn young
      people about terrorism.

Dr Ameer Ali, the chairman of the Muslim Reference Group that advises the
Federal Government, said most imams were already giving sermons in English with
      translations into local languages.

One leader, Yasser Soliman, said it was the reference group, of which he is a
member, that had made the sermon proposals to the Government. The Government
had accepted the ideas and agreed that Muslims would not be isolated as "the
      problem".

Now the results of a partnership of goodwill were being used as ammunition
against Muslims, making the community suspicious of Muslims and Muslims
      suspicious of the Government.

"It looks to Muslims as though the Government engineered the conference so it
could tell Muslims to shape up or ship out," Mr Soliman said.

"The reality is we agree what needs to be done. What we are really asking is
that we be positioned as fellow Australians who may have problems we have to
deal with and are trying to deal with, rather than as a foreign people who are
      not integrated, not fellow Australians."

The group of more than 100 imams announced that they would establish a new
national board to tackle issues facing the Muslim community, including
      terrorism.

Mr Robb said the new citizenship measures were not aimed at people from any
particular country. "This is not an anti-terrorism initiative," he told Channel
      Nine.

"It is an initiative to give the broader Australian community comfort in a very
globalised world where we've got so many people moving around the world," he
      said.

Most people wanting to become citizens already have to show a basic
understanding of English during an interview in which they are asked simple
questions, such as how long they have lived here and how many children they
      have.

Residency requirements have already been sharpened. People will now have to
wait at least four years instead of two before being able to apply for
      citizenship.

But the Government argues a formal citizenship test will provide a "real
incentive to learn English and to understand the Australian way of life",
      according to its discussion paper.

While Mr Robb stressed that the language test would not require a university
level of understanding of English, the new version is likely to include both
written and oral sections, with separate components on listening and reading.
People under 18 and over 60 would be exempted from the language requirements,
as would people with disabilities. Failing the test would not have any impact
on a person's existing visa status.

Viewers last night saw the first in a series of government ads on the values of
      citizenship.

W Sydney dzis zaczyna sie dlugi weekend i dwutygodniowe wiosenne wakacje
szkolne.

milosnikow ogrodow trwa Tulip Festival w pobliskim Bowral , jesli lubicie muzyke
W Melbourne w finalowym meczu rugby AFL bedzie gral sydnejski
zespol Sydney Swans, wiec czesc Sydnejczykow spedzi nieco czasu przed
akrobatyczne samoloty klubowe. Restauracje i teatry zapelnia sie kolorowym,
      wiosennym tlumem.

skladaja sie z dwoch czesci: Parenting Payment i Family Tax Benefit (parts A &
B). Po urodzeniu dziecka dostaje sie tez jednorazowe "becikowe" zwane tu
Maternity Payment ($4100) i zasilek na szczepienia Maternity Immunisation
      Allowance ($227).

Wysokosc zasilkow zalezy od statusu malzenskiego i materialnego osoby
opiekujacej sie dzieckiem oraz od wieku dziecka. Pelna lista zasilkow jest na
      stronie Centerlinku.

Parenting Payment obecnie wynosi maksymalnie $512.10 co
dwa tygodnie (samotna osoba z dzieckiem)

      Family Tax benefit (part A & B)

Maximum Rate of Family Tax Benefit A:
For Each Child Per Fortnight Per Year
      Under 13 years $140.84 $4317.95
      13-15 years $179.76 $5332.65
      16 - 17 years $45.36 $1828.65
      18 - 24 years $61.04 $2237.45

Maximum Rate of Family Tax Benefit B
Age of Youngest Child Per Fortnight Per Year Per Year with supplement
      Under 5 years $120.96 $3153.60 $3467.50
      5 - 15 years (or 16 - 18 years if a full-time student) $84.28 $2197.30 $2511

moze dostac $812 dolarow samych zasilkow (ponad 21 tysiecy dolarow rocznie):
      Parenting Payment $512.10 + FTB (A) $179.76 + FTB (B) $120.96

Child Care Benefit ktory pokrywa czesc kosztow
      licencjonowanych przedszkoli i swietlic szkolnych.
Concession and Health Care Cards karta znizkowa uzywana
dla uzyskania znizek w przychodniach, aptekach, kosztach edukacji i transportu.
      Znizki zaleza od wladz stanowych.
Rent Assistance czyli doplata do czynszu, np dla samotnej
osoby z dzieckiem maksymalnie $121.24 co dwa tygodnie.
Pensioner Education Supplement pokrywajacy czesc kosztow
      zwiazanych z edukacja

      wiecej.

Lata temu dzieki tym zasilkom moglam spokojnie uczyc sie angielskiego,
wychowujac dzieci i mieszkajac w wynajetym mieszkaniu a potem moglam zdobyc
lokalne wyksztalcenie, co pomoglo mi w znalezieniu pracy.

Reserve destroys the myth of migrants on dole

        Jessica Irvine Economics Correspondent
        September 21, 2007

THE stereotype of the dole-bludging immigrant is a myth, research by
        the Reserve Bank has found.

Drawing on unpublished figures from the Bureau of Statistics, the
bank's researchers found workforce participation among immigrants
who arrived between 2001 and 2005 was higher than for the total
        population.

The proportion in or looking for work in July this year was 68.2 per
cent, compared to 65 per cent for the population as a whole.

A strong economy, increased skilled migration and the fact that
immigrants were more likely to be of working age were behind the
        result, the bank said.

"With immigrants relatively more concentrated in the prime working-
age group, it may not be surprising that they have participation
rates above the national average," a paper released yesterday said.

Immigrant unemployment had also fallen dramatically over the past
two decades, the bank found, from above 30 per cent during the 1991
recession, to roughly 7 per cent last year.

The longer someone had been in Australia, the further this fell. For
migrants who arrived between 2001 and 2005 their jobless rate in
July this year was almost the same as the national rate, 4.9 per
cent compared to 4.3 per cent. For more recent arrivals, in 2006 or
2007, it was still higher at 13.1 per cent.

"While in the year after arrival the immigrant unemployment rate is
consistently higher than the national unemployment rate, in recent
years this gap has narrowed significantly," the Reserve Bank said.

Immigrants accounted for almost a third of all jobs growth between
        2001 and 2006.

In an economy close to full employment, migrant workers and
increased participation by older and younger workers have helped
keep pressure off wages and inflation - the trigger for higher
        interest rates.

"Immigrants have accounted for a considerable proportion of
employment growth in a historically tight labour market," the bank
        said.

More than 180,000 permanent visas were granted in 2005-06, with more
than half granted under the skilled migrant scheme. A quarter were
granted to family members of Australians, 24,000 for New Zealand
settlers and 14,000 for humanitarian reasons.

The bank said there was still scope for increased participation by
        older people in the workforce.

While participation had increased dramatically in the past decade,
Australia had fewer people aged 55 to 64 in the workforce than
comparable economies. It was 57.5 per cent in Australia, 59 in
Canada, 63.5 in Britain and the US, and 73 in Sweden.

o ponad 200, w ktorych nadzoruja jakosc wody). Najwieksze i najbardziej znane
centra to Homebush Aquatic Park (miejsce zawodow olimpijskich w 2000),
wybudowane na potrzeby Olimpiady do konkurencji waterpolo centrum w Ryde,
nowoczesna plywalnia obok Hyde Park (Cook + Phillip Park) i mnostwo innych.

Publiczne baseny w centrum Sydney sa bardzo zroznicowane i
ciekawe. Wsrod nich odkryty ogrzewany basen czynny caly rok jest w Camperdown
      (Victoria Park Pool)

Biuro meteorologiczne czasem

Sydney ranked top city in tourist poll
      October 11, 2007 - 3:39PM

Sydney has been ranked the world's top city in an international
tourist poll by a top US travel magazine.

The Australian tourist mecca scored the highest points when rated by
readers of US-based Conde Nast Traveler (Conde Nast Traveler) in the
      magazine's annual readers choice awards.

The awards, which began in 1988, are awarded after questionnaires
are sent to the magazine's 387,000 subscribers, who rank top cities,
      islands, resorts and airlines.

Sydney scored the highest mark this year, on 87.7, beating Florence
(86.8), San Francisco (85.9) and Bangkok (85.8), with readers
commenting on the city's "ambience and friendliness".

Also scoring mentions in the regional lists were US city Santa Fe
(84.1), and Venice and New York (both 82.9).

Melbourne was the only other Australian city to make the list,
      scoring 76.3.

Federal Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said the award was good news
      for Australian tourism.

"This is a well deserved win," Ms Bailey said today.

She said the Sydney Harbour, Opera House and great shopping made
Sydney "one of the greatest cities in the world".

She said the award should spur more Americans to take the trip Down
      Under.

"Conde Nast is one of the most recognised travel publications,
especially for the American market," Ms Bailey said.

"Sydney is an international gateway for tourists.

"First stop is often Sydney, but then they visit other great cities
such as Melbourne and regional areas such as the beautiful Yarra
      Valley."

She said the American tourism market was worth $1.9 billion annually
with more than 450,000 Americans visiting Australia each year.

It is not the first time Sydney has been rated best city by the
      magazine.

Sydney has won top spot on the magazine's best city list many times
      since 1993.

            www.pilotguides.com/destination_guide/pacific/australia/witchetty_grub.php

Witchetty grubs are traditionally eaten live and raw. Their meat is
rich in protein and makes for a highly nutritious snack if you’re
tramping through the bush. Raw witchetties have a subtle, slightly
sweet flavour and a liquid centre.

Barbecued, witchetties are often eaten as an appetizer. They are
cooked over a fire on pieces of wire, rather like shasliks or
satays. It takes about two minutes each side for the meat to become
white and chewy and the skin crusty. Barbecued witchetties taste
quite like chicken or prawns with peanut sauce.

If you don’t fancy foraging for your grub, these days it is possible
to buy tins of witchetty soup in supermarkets across Australia.

Kagan - możesz się zrewanżować takiemu rekinowi i zjeść go w zupie.

rąk do gotowania, można kupić i upichcić wszystko.

Rzad Australii przeprasza Aborygenów - pelny tekst ponizej:

"I give notice that, at the next sitting, I will move:

That today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest
      continuing cultures in human history.

We reflect on their past mistreatment.

We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were
Stolen Generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history.

The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in
Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving
forward with confidence to the future.

We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and
governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss
      on these our fellow Australians.

We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and
      their country.

For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their
descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.

To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for
the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.

And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud
people and a proud culture, we say sorry.

We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this
apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of
      the healing of the nation.

For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the
history of our great continent can now be written.

We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying
claim to a future that embraces all Australians.

A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the
past must never, never happen again.

A future where we harness the determination of all Australians,
Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us
in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity.

A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to
enduring problems where old approaches have failed.

A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual
      responsibility.

A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly
equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in
shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country,
      Australia."

W strukturze towarowej australijskiego eksportu (bez usług)
dominującą pozycje zajmują wciąż surowce i produkty podstawowe,
rolne. Wyroby przemysłowe stanowia ok. 29% wartości eksportu.

      Najważniejsze produkty eksportowe Australii to:
      - węgiel kamienny - główni odbiorcy to Japonia, Korea
      Południowa i Indie;
      - ruda żelaza - główni odbiorcy to Chiny Ludowe, Japonia i
      Korea Południowa;
      - ropa naftowa - główni odbiorcy to Korea Południowa, Singapur
      i Japonia oraz
      - złoto - główni odbiorcy to Indie. Syjam (Tajlandia) i Wielka
      Brytania.
Powyższe artykuły stanowiły łącznie blisko 1/3 australijskiego
eksportu. Inne istotne pozycje australijskiej oferty eksportowej to:
wołowina, boksyty (rudy aluminium), aluminium, pszenica, (skroplony)
gaz ziemny, wino i inne napoje alkoholowe.

Zdecydowana większość australijskiego importu to wyroby przemysłowe,
które stanowia ok. 82% importu, z czego ok. 74% to artykuły wysoko
przetworzone. Zdecydowanie mniejsza role odgrywa w Australii import
Ponad 30%
      1/3 importu Australii to:
      - samochody osobowe- główni dostawcy to Japonia, Niemcy i
      Korea Południowa;
      - ropa naftowa - główni dostawcy to Wietnam, Malezja i
      Indonezja;
      - sprzęt komputerowy - główni dostawcy to Chiny Ludowe,
      Malezja i USA;
      - lekarstwa - główni dostawcy to Wielka Brytania, USA i Niemcy;
      - sprzęt telekomunikacyjny - główni dostawcy to Chiny Ludowe,
      Korea Południowa i USA;
      - produkty rafinacji ropy naftowe - główni dostawcy to
Singapur, Chiny (Tajwan) i Japonia oraz
      - samochody ciężarowe - główni dostawcy to Japonia, Tajlandia
      i USA.
      badawczo-rozwojowego (R&D).
    • luiza-w-ogrodzie Sydney: the world's 10th best city 11.06.08, 02:43
Dzis zostal opublikowany kolejny doroczny ranking Mercera.
Podsumowanie w artykule z Sydney Morning Herald: Sydney: the world's 10th best city

Sydney is a little less liveable than last year, but it is still
better than Melbourne, which in turn is better than Perth, which is
      way better than Adelaide.

That sounds about right, but then this year's Worldwide Quality of
Living Index reckons Adelaide is better than Brisbane, allegedly the
least liveable of Australia's big-five capitals. Brisbane worse than
Adelaide? Yes - and the gap is widening.

The index, compiled by Mercer, a human resources consulting company,
ranks 215 big cities on 39 criteria including crime, pollution,
      education, restaurants, climate and transport.

Mercer sells its services to companies transferring its employees to
different cities, and says anyone going to a city that scores badly
(below 90 on an index where the base, New York City, scores 100, in
49th place) expects to be paid a premium.

The index has Sydney as the tenth-most liveable city, down from
ninth last year, on 106.3. But it falls behind Auckland (fifth) and
just ahead of windy Wellington (12th), a funky upstart that trounces
Melbourne (17th) and the other three Australian cities. Zurich is on
      top, then Geneva and Vienna.

Adelaide, in 29th place, is five spots above Brisbane; last year, it
was two places higher. The difference, says the index's briefing
note, is that Adelaide was noted for its medical treatment,
restaurants, opera and the arts, while Brisbane had entertainment
      and mild winters.

In comparison, France's cosmopolitan Paris is ranked at 32nd, while
the top-rated United States' cities are Hawaii's Honolulu at 28th
followed by California's San Francisco at 29th. Hong Kong (70th),
Beijing (116) and Jakarta (146) are well down the list.

Mercer spokesman Rob Knox said the annual survey was used by
international companies and governments as they set pay rates for
      expat workers.

"The fact that Australian cities enjoy among the best standards of
living in the world reinforces the attractiveness of Australia for
workers and for multinational organisations," Mr Knox said in a
      statement.

"Our major cities continue to tick all of the boxes (with)
established infrastructure and transport facilities, quality housing
close to the city, a wide selection of restaurants and other
amenities, as well as a good education and environment."

The global survey relies on data collected over three months to
November the previous year, and last-minute monitoring is also made.

Mercer also today released the results of a similar survey ranking
the safety of 215 cities across the globe.

Luxembourg came in at number one, while Australia's Sydney,
Melbourne and Perth were tied on 29th, and Adelaide and Brisbane
      tied on 49th.

Mercer also found the "city with the world's lowest quality of
living and lowest levels of personal safety" is Baghdad, as the war-
torn Iraqi capital sits on the bottom of both lists.
