A sentence a day !

IP: *.in-addr.btopenworld.com 21.02.08, 15:27
Hi Jon, I have just invented a new saying in English which is "a
sentence a day keeps the teacher away" :)

Do you think is it a good idea to memorize sentences rahter then
bothering ourselfs with learning grammer rules and new words"?

Thanks.

I can see what you are saying..direct method teaching comprises
vocab. grammar and sentences...do you think that memorising just
sentences is contextual? For example, let's say you revise 10
sentences about the weather...but someone asks you 'what do you
think about global warming?' You might find that you are unable to
answer as you haven't memorised sentences for that topic. Also..you
would have to memorise past/present and future sentences...it would
take lots of your time...I think the path of least resistence is
through vocab. and using what you have learned at work and on the
      street.

Another analogy is thinking of vocab. , grammar and sentences as a
road map...with that map you drive anywhere you want...without it
you could memorise certain routes but would have trouble finding
      other destinations...!!

How about..learning a sentence a day keeps the teacher gainfully
      employed!!

Well it seems it's not a good idea though. But I agree with that it
might be usefull if have a tear-away calender in English and
memorise idioms and saying as I can show off while I'm talking to my
        English friends :)

        Thanks again for your opinions.

Hi Masud...the Idiom calendar sounds like a great idea...!! :))

I doubt whether you will be able to learn a language by just
memorising sentences, however it might be a useful suplement to
      normal study.
I'm learning Spanish at the moment, and this year I bought a desk
calendar with tear-away pages that have a single Spanish saying,
proverb or idiom for every day of the year. I'm not sure if you can
get these in English, but they are very useful for learning "a
little something" every single day, especially if you're staring at
them all day sitting at your desk.

Yes...I like the idea of topping up regular study with something
extra...single words on flash cards are popular but idioms are more
fun as they carry a message..

      Jonathan is a merciful person.
You don't say: "invented", you should say "discovered". Edison
invented a light bulb, some of us discovered it... ;]

Thanks! Perhaps another word to have used would have
been 'innovate' - but then only if you have developed a special
method for learning vast chunks of information quickly!! :)

The sentence 'a x a day keeps y away' has been around for a while.
Every next version is a mere modification, customization and should be treated
as nothing more than just this. I don't think it's Masud's
lack of modesty or definitions, it's limited vocabulary and, here it
          comes, contact with the teacher.

► Now this is a result of intensive learning and overall intelligence.
Not everybody is capable of such cognitive process. However it is possible, but
only when a solid foundation is in place. Because of this for instance computer
specialists can keep up with an enormous progress.

By the way; Masud is a person's name in arabic.

Yes...the whole thread reminds me of the A.I super computer (H.A.L)
in the Sci-Fi film 2001 A Space Odyssey!

I clicked the Polish link at the end of your mail and got though to
            the Daily Bikini Page...?

► Oh, that's just a part of an old song in the spirit of pre-WWII Warsaw.
The war destroyed the authentic population of Warsaw, the commies just finished
it with implanting peasants from the east of Poland, Ukraine and so forth. It's
somewhat difficult to explain it in just a few words...
The link gets you to Daily Bikini page without any connection to the
words. It's humorous and may please the eye of a true man ;]. The
ladies change on daily bases. The site itself offers a nice collection of useful
              links.
All not to be taken seriously.
              • jonathan.oakley Re: Quite so! 24.02.08, 21:07
wow! Fascinating and thanks for the explanation...I was
intrigued...the pictures are certainly pleasing! :)

Everyone in UK knows this saying even the foreign ones. I was just
trying to make funny and exciting of my idea "to memorize a sentence
a day" is useful or not. I'm not stupid to claim seriously that I
invented or discovered or innovated this saying. Anyway, Masud might
be an arabic name, but I can't see any point to indicating that in
this forum. I might be an mix polish and arab or i might be an
polish immigrant who lives in turkey or it might be just my nick
name. None uf them has got to do with subject.
            Thanks

I enjoyed reading your idea...you gave it with a nip of humour and
that can only be good. :)
