Ukrainian PM to attend EurAsEC summit



RBC, 11.08.2006, Kiev 16:13:50.Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich
will take part in the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC) summit in Sochi on
August 15-16, the PM said during a meeting with Crimean officials today. While
in Sochi, he intends to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and hold
talks with Russian PM Mikhail Fradkov.

Though Ukraine is not part of EurAsEC, Yanukovich will participate in a
Ukrainian-Russian intergovernmental commission meeting to be held as part of
the summit, he said. The main issue on the agenda of the economic cooperation
committee meeting will be the upcoming intergovernmental Yushchenko-Putin
commission meeting. It has been one and a half years since the commission
convened last, Yanukovich said, stressing that the meeting should be held as
soon as possible, because several issues had become extremely acute and gained
never-before-seen political significance

Ukraine delays NATO entry


Ukraine has deferred filing for a NATO membership action plan, RBC has been
told by the press office of the country’s cabinet citing Prime Minister Viktor
Yanukovich.
“Thus, waiving an immediate filing, we are poised to work toward genuine
rapprochement with NATO, to hold the necessary reforms and meet the
recommendations already issued by the alliance during the pause,” the PM said.

“We have settled that the Ukrainian government will confirm its commitment to
further develop its relations with NATO against the existing legal background,
including yearly target Ukraine-NATO plans, as well as a closer dialog over
Ukraine’s future membership,” Yanukovich added.

“We believe that filing for NATO membership just a few days after a severe
political crisis in the country may trigger new social and political rifts,”
the Prime Minister said.

A projected nationwide referendum in Ukraine will finally determine whether or
not the nation is to join NATO, Yanukovich supposes.

As reported earlier, the drive for Ukraine’s accession to NATO and integration
into the European Union was launched right after Viktor Yushchenko won the
presidential election of 2004. The president largely owes his victory to his
pro-western platform. The authorities are time and again reporting progress in
the talks with the organizations, and expect a final decision to be made soon.

Ukraine has been split in two halves over the issue. Viktor Yanukovich’s
supporters at the election of 2004 oppose NATO presence whatever form it may
take. They held decisive protests in late May, when a US vessel shipped
equipment for the Sea Breeze exercise to the port of Feodosiya. Later on, US
troops arrived.

The protests were denounced by the Kievian authorities, and the National
Security and Defense Council of Ukraine convened to discuss this matter
resolved to deport Russians who had participated in the anti-NATO riots in the
Crimea. Meanwhile, the Crimean parliament claimed autonomy for the “NATO-free
territory” at one of its meetings

Zwycięstwo wyborcze Janukowycza ma dokładnie takie samo znaczenie, jak
zwycięstwo wyborcze SLD i PSL w 1993. Nie przeszkodziło to wejściu Polski do
NATO i UE. Co ciekawsze, Polska weszła do tych organizacji nawet po drugim
zwycięstwie wyborczym tych band i nawet za czasów rządów SLD, które zresztą
wtedy miało ZARÓWNO prezydenta jak i rząd.

Na Ukrainie tak nie jest. Jest proniepodległościowy prezydent.
