1270: Moses Ben Nachman, known as Nachmanides or as the Ramban dies on the
fourth of Cheshvan, 5031. Born in Gerona in 1194, he was famed for his
commentaries on the Bible and his prowess in debating displayed in the verbal
battle against Pablo Christiani, a convert to Catholicism, in Aragon in 1263.
Although King James I decides the debate against Nachmanides, the Ramban is
favored by the court. He is banished from Spain after papal pressure was
brought against him, settling later in Eretz-Israel where he establishes a
synagogue and school for Talmudic studies.

1943: Led by Alexander Pecherski and a few other Jewish members of the Red
Army, a revolt breaks out in the Sobibor death camp when a number of SS guards
are killed. Prevented from fleeing through the gates, 130 Jews died trying to
escape through the mine fields. Thirty find their way to freedom. The remaining
140 are captured and shot. The camp itself is closed immediately.

      German neo-Nazis celebrate
      terror attacks against the U.S.
      By Toby Axelrod

BERLIN, Oct. 4 (JTA) — For years, observers of the German far-right have
documented links between Islamic extremists and German neo-Nazis.

This week, German neo-Nazis made their sympathies clear when they celebrated
the Sept. 11 terror attacks against the United States during a demonstration
here marking the 11th anniversary of the unification of the former East and
      West Germany.

In banners and speeches Wednesday, members of the extreme right-wing National
Democratic Party called the attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon
a justified response to American policies, and they protested Germany's support
      for a war on terrorism.

Meanwhile, German government leaders toned down the usual festivities marking
the anniversary of unification. Instead, they spoke about the need to safeguard
      freedom and democracy.

During official ceremonies in the city of Mainz, the president of the German
Parliament, Wolfgang Thierse, said the "horrific events" of Sept. 11 made it
clear that peace and freedom are endangered.

In Berlin, the approximately 1,000 neo-Nazis were countered by an equal number
of left-wing protesters who blocked the planned parade route.

Police rerouted the neo-Nazi march to side streets in order to prevent clashes.
More than 4,000 police were on duty. No major problems were reported.

During the march, National Democratic Party leader Steffen Hupka called the
Sept. 11th attacks a form of resistance to American imperialism and he called
for "the death of the United States as a world power."

A Berlin court had banned the former left-wing terrorist Horst Mahler, now a
leader of the far-right group, from speaking at the neo-Nazi rally because of
comments he made on the group's Web site calling the terror attacks "effective"
      and "justified."

To protest the neo-Nazis, many shops and theaters lining the parade route along
Berlin's Kurfurstendamm rolled down their shutters and draped their signboards
      with black.

A shoe store had a sign in its windows reading, "Anyone may enter, if they
stand up as we do for the basic values of our society: democracy, tolerance and
cultural pluralism. To all those who tread on these values, we will show the
      cold shoulder."

The largest group of counter demonstrators gathered under the nonpartisan
      umbrella of "Europe Against Racism."

At that rally, Michel Friedman, vice president of the Central Council of Jews
in Germany, urged that the National Democratic Party be banned.

In fact, the federal government is considering the legality of banning the
party on the grounds that it promotes violence and is undemocratic.

According to German officials, the party has about 6,000 members nationwide.
The party recruits its members from skinhead groups around Germany.

None of the extreme-right parties have had any significant political successes
in recent years, with the exception of the German People's Union, which won
nearly 13 percent in state elections in Saxony-Anhalt more than three years ago.

Fatah Calls on Arabs to Dictate Terms of Reference

      07 October 2001

A Fatah press release has called upon Arab states to impose their priorities on
the US-led alliance against terrorism. Placing their call in apocalyptic terms,
the release said, “Arabs and Muslims have only two options: either to have the
power of unity and the justice of their cause to maintain their dignity and
protect their civilization, or to have the weakness of disunity and therefore
cause their civilization to collapse.” Arab states must stand up to
American “blackmail,” the Fatah says, since “the US Administration… categorizes
countries that stand against its biased policies as terrorist ones.”

What priorities should the Arab world impose on the coalition? “A unified Arab
and Muslim position on what constitutes world terrorism,” Fatah claims, “will
make the US realize that it cannot mobilize all countries against ghosts or
individuals it cannot indict. The US should not be allowed to ignore the
assassinations and daily killings in Palestine being carried out by a real
murderer, Sharon, who is still at large… The new definition of terrorism should
explicitly force Israel as a strong ally of the US to acknowledge its
responsibility for the injustices it has inflicted on the Palestinian people.”

Using collective Arab weight to impose their priorities, according to the
Fatah, “will help protect the Palestinian people who are being targeted by the
US and the Zionist entity. Both parties should understand that calling for
quiet and stability cannot veil their true intentions.” Moving into a more
belligerent tone, the Fatah threatens that the tactic of confrontation with the
coalition “…may become a strategy unless the US and Israel are pressured into
acting upon international resolutions pertaining to the Palestinian issue.” If
Arabs do not act to define the anti-terrorism coalition terms of reference, the
press release warns, “the tyranny based on the US definition of terrorism will
      grow limitless.”
