grocery store suicide attack
By THE JERUSALEM POST INTERNET STAFF
Avner Mordechai, 60, was killed early Thursday morning when a suicide bomber
blew up in his grocery store in northern Israel early Thursday. Mordechai is
survived by his wife Shifra and six children. He will be buried at the
moshav's cemetery at 5pm on Thursday.
Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility, Israel Radio reported.
The attack occurred at about 6am in Moshav Sde Terumot, some five kilometers
south of Beit Shean, in the Jordan Valley.
The area police commander, Yaakov Borovski, told Israel Radio that two
witnesses saw the bomber enter the grocery and explode. "We are on the scene
and are trying to find whoever sent him, because the assumption is that he
didn't work alone," he said.
Police were looking for clues and suspect that the bomber had intended to
hit a more public target, but his explosives detonated too soon.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
Witness Asher Ben-Moussa said the bomber was a young man carrying a bag and
dressed in jeans and a short-sleeved shirt. "He walked up to the grocery
store, all the while looking me in the eye," Ben-Moussa told Israel Radio.
"He touched several bottles of wine near the door and waited only 10 seconds
before going inside and blowing up. Then everything flew towards me."
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the early morning attack,
15km east of the West Bank city of Jenin.
Sde Terumot is near the Gilboa Mountain range which borders on the northern
West Bank.
It was the second terror attack inside Israel this week. On Tuesday night a
seven-year-old Israeli girl was killed in a shooting attack on her family's
car on the Trans-Israel Highway, opposite the West Bank town of Kalkilya.
