Can we say "what does it call" in the sense of "what is its name"?

ex.
- What does it call?
- it's a sort of phone.

You would not use "what doest it call" in any sensE - correct
phrase (and Steve just answered your question) is "WHAT IS IT
CALLED"...

NOPE...

But u can say "Where does "IT" calls?" in the sense of finding out to
whom "IT" talks.... if "IT" is not tlaking to u :-) (do not worry
hairy "IT" usually does it)

You might say "what does it call" in very rare circumstances. For instance:

A - When my telephone connection fails, my phone sends a message to the phone company.

B - Without a connection, what does it call?

C - There's a special backup connection that uses a different signal.

No, but you can say: "What is it called" or "What do you call it?"
