1) "I WOULD smoke, but I gave up last year." Is it a correct sentence? I
remember that WOULD is used for repeated actions in the past, so it sounds
fine to me.

2) "He WOULD always be the first to arrive at parties." Is it a good
sentence? I've read it in a student's book & I'm confused about the usage of
WOULD now (see point 1)

Yes, it's correct, but with a different meaning than i think you intended. W
tym przypadku "would smoke" oznacza raczej "zapalilbym", np. "i would have a
drink with you, but i have to drive home." Jesli chodzi o przeszlosc, to lepsze
by bylo "I used to smoke".

This is correct and has the meaning you describe in point 1.

If you want to say that this activity was repeated in the past (as you imply)
you should say "I used to smoke"

Ok but I was taught to use USED TO for states & situations, not WOULD (WOULD -
only actions) - isn't TO BE a state?
