dlaczego peoples jest prawidłowe i kiedy używamy

15.03.11, 08:46
Czasem spotykam się z takimi określeniami w mowie i nie mówię tu o np. People's Republic of China. Trudno mi podać jakiś konkretny przykład użycia ale można sobie wpisać w google np. "all peoples" i wyskakują wyniki z poprawnym (zakładam) użyciem.

Czy ktoś może mi wytłumaczyć w jakich wypadkach i dlaczego używamy peoples ?

"people" means, first of all, "the common folk" - that's why People's Republic = Republika Ludowa in all it's former and current uses, including Polish People's Republic = PRL.

No, you hold on. You are wrong on three counts.

First, the plural people (no article before people) first of all means humans, persons, and is not restricted to common folks.

Second of all, the people (note the article) can mean ordinary people, the general public, or your common folks if you like. But this sense needs its "the."

Third, it was The Polish People’s Republic, as in (The Polish People)'s Republic.

        N.B. …in all its former… rather than …in all it’s former...

If this puerile lingustic pedantry gives you a kick, so be it - enjoy, you must get little stimulation.

However, you are wrong as to the definite article in front of a country's name - it should be the Republic of Poland, the United States of Mexico, etc if you insist. To my knowledge, the only countries which have "The" as part of its name are - The Netherlands, The Gambia and The Phillipinnes.

Pray tell, on how many counts am I wrong?

            Nonsense.
For example, the German Federal Republic.
The Polish People's Republic also has its the. The crux of the matter is the meaning of "the people" with its genitive ending. But I have a feeling I am wasting time on you.

            > Pray tell, on how many counts am I wrong?
You are again wrong on all counts. You don’t know much, do you.

by "the" - that's rare although not unknown in medicine.

                Well, nuts to you.
