What do you find IT difficult...?

11.02.05, 10:32
"What do you find it difficult to do when you're tired?" - a sentence I found
in my English book. Why not: "What do you find difficult to do....". The
word "it" in the original sentence doesn't really make sense to me! Is there
any explanation for its presence?

I think not. It must be a mistake.

to musi byc pomylka w ksiazce.
      Poprawnie byloby z WHY
Why do you find it difficult?
      ale
      What do you find difficult?

Your English book being ....? I know it's hard to believe, but even English
books aren't immune to errors :)

      It should be:
What do you find difficult to do .... or
What is it you find difficult to do ......
    • Gość: kovalsky it's correct but unnecessary IP: 66.114.229.* 11.02.05, 21:09
A: I find it difficult to do things when i'm tired.
Q: What, for example, do you find it difficult to do when you’re tired?
A: When I’m tired, I find it difficult to concentrate on what I’m reading.

You could just say “What do you find difficult to do when you’re tired?”

        kovalsky:
In teh sentences you pasted IT is correct but the sentences you have pasted are
very diffrent from the initial one pasted by the person asking. She pasted a
        question.

In the sentence pytaczki/pytacza usage of the word IT is incorrect because the
subject is doubled: WHAT & IT

I'll have to agree with Rita here. That It is incorrect and it doesn't even
sound right in that sentence there. That IT would be correct if the sentence
started with WHY, but then the meaning would be different

Why is it difficult for you?

The question comes from the "English File - intermediate student's book", p. 31
            (Practice a; 6), and it's repeated in the Teacher's Book on p.33.
I have to say that my husband is English and he agrees that the question sounds
fine but he's not able to explain why...

Here "what" is used adverbially and means "to what extent," "how much," or
              even "why."
It works the same way in
              What do you care?
              What does it matter?
What did you pay for it?

                That what! Obviously...
What with all these questions, translations and late nights, we just forgot to
                say it ;)
