NKJO (English Teacher Training College)

Who can tell us anything about a three year course at one of these NJKO
places?

There seems to be one in almost every Polish city.

Those NKJO places offer more than just "courses". The one I graduated from
offered so called 'licencjat' exam at the end of the three year program, which
is the equivalent of a BA degree. I am sure that most of the Teacher Training
Colleges (NKJOs), if not all of them, offer it, too. Studies in one of those
places are undergraduate studies when you take the 'licencjat' exam at the end.
That is what I did, and that was my ticket to graduate studies in education in
      Canada, where I am now.

        Thank you!

Any idea what kind of courses one has to study? For example is it mostly
practical or do these places also look at things like history etc. ?

What levels are the students at in terms of English proficiency?

ONLY the Teacher Training College of English at Warsaw University! It is
          absolutely wonderful.
You get not only a lot of theory but tons of practical training as well. The
teachers there are great, too. What's more they are the authors of all the
important methodology and grammar books. Check out some of these names: Dr
Komorowska, Ms. Golebiowska, Ms. Gorska... While other colleges use their
books, you get to work with the authors on everyday basis. This college has
also incredible grammar and phonetics teachers. Really, I can't say enough good
          things about this school...
As far as courses are concerned, besides all the English language-related
ones, you study American/British history and culture, American/British
literature, linguistics, psychology, METHODOLOGY and a foreign language.

More questions? Let me know :o)

            Thanks again!

What can you tell me about student language levels?

Are first year students, on average, of FCE level or higher?

What do you do in British and American history classes? Do you follow some form
of coursebooks - are they lectures or seminar based? Sorry, lots of
            questions ...

It really depends on the college, I think. But I would say FCE is the minimum.
I am not sure, though. Call up some colleges, talk to the teachers and students
there. That'll give you some idea.

Again, colleges vary but I remember having coursebooks and lectures. British
and American history classes at my college lasted two semesters each and we had
an exam at the end of the first year. Depending on the teacher, it was either
an oral or a written exam. :o)

              take care :o) Maggie7

maggie7, you seem to enjoy our school a lot.
when did you graduate? I think the first years were the best. now it is not the
                same

Mouchi, I did graduate quite a few years ago... Is it possible the college has
changed for worse since then? :(
                  • mouchi Re: NKJO (English Teacher Training College) 02.10.02, 15:17
I heard it's not the same. The atmosphere is worse ( though I do not know in
what sense). anyway, I think we felt more... I don't know. we somehow created
it, and I guess we had fabulous teachers, even those who were lousy. I will
never forget Jack White. Do you remember him?

Mouchi, I don't remember Jack White :( I must have studied there later than
you, or he didn't teach me. Lets see, I graduated in 1998, and you?
                      Take care :)
