Vancouver Woman To Be Human Shield
On Saturday, March 8th, 2003, International Women’s Day, Vancouver’s Stefa
Shaler, will make her own solemn commitment to internationalism. Stefa
departs for Baghdad to join the ranks of people who care so much for peace
and are so opposed to war in Iraq that they are offering themselves as human
shields to protect critical Iraqi facilities such as schools, hospitals,
water and power stations on behalf of the Iraqi people. “I know that I have
to do what I can to help protect the Iraqi people” Stefa said “and while I
do not know what the future will bring, I desperately hope for peace.”
Stefa Shaler is a Peace activist within the StopWar.ca coalition in Greater
Vancouver. She will be a featured speaker at StopWar.ca’s Press Conference
on Friday, March 7, 2003 at 12:00 noon in front of the U.S. Consulate, 1095
W. Pender St., Vancouver, B.C. Stefa will be joined by Irene McInnes and
Linda Morgan who traveled to Baghdad in December 2002 as part of a Canadian
Peace Mission.
“Stefa is taking a courageous stand to protect the men, women and
especially the children of Iraq” said Irene McInnes. “I’ve been there. I’
ve seen the eyes, the faces of the women and children. I’ve heard the
mothers asking, what have we done to deserve to die, why are we condemned to
watch our children die?
“The people of Iraq are being targeted to die in a hideous ‘blood for oil’
rush to war” said Linda Morgan. “It’s immoral. It’s illegal and it must be
stopped!”
