It should be - which ONE is your husband? – that’s proper, not - which is your husband? And - what is your husband???? sorry but I never heard anybody speaking in that manner, what does your husband do for living? or - what does he think he’s doing? But never ever - what is sb? But maybe that’s American English (????)… I would like to know. That’s not the contest, I thought – oh silly sausage - these pages are for people who want to improve their skills, so any kind of help is useful, obviously not. Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś
zegar4 Re: What do you think 06.05.03, 06:03 "Which" can be used for things and persons, be it American or British English. I hope you don't doubt that. There is a different implication though. "Which is your husband?" implies that the speaker is limiting the domain of men to a selected group of people, e.g., the ones present in the room. Therefore, in this case, the question would be understood to mean: "Which of the man in the room is your husband?", and the answer might be: "The one talking with your sister." - a reply that identifies the man. Whether you add "one" or not, ("Which one is your husband?"), the meaning doesn't change. Besides, "one" would stand for a living, breathing human being, wouldn't it? "Who is your husband?" is a request for the husband's name. John Smith or Mr. Ian Brown would be typical answers. (Let's not dwell on the issue of savoir vivre for now - but "Who is her husband?" would be less risky, I think.) "What is your husband?" calls for, as you said, the man's profession or position with the company. It is worth mentioning that before a pronoun or a determiner (my, the, etc.) "which of" appears to be the right choice: "Which of your men is your husband?" Also, "which" works nicely before a noun: "Which husband do you like best?" if you do mean what you say. Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś
wierzbowa Re: What do you think 09.05.03, 23:15 Perhaps I did not explain myself well enough. You can not – in proper English and by proper, I’m talking “Queen English”, the one in which "a tissue" is actually pronounce as long "s", not "sh" – use “which” just by itself. You should say “which one is your husband?”, “which of these men…?” instead of “which is your husband?”. Of course the meaning doesn’t change, but if in polish you use “se” instead of “sobie” the meaning of the question stays the same, what doesn’t change the fact, that the sentence is composed incorrectly. As for the question “who is your husband?”. You compose the question in this fashion if you want the answer – “my husband is a person I am married to” or you know the firm he works for and you just ask about his position in this company. And I still stand by my opinion that question “what is your husband?” doesn’t make sense. You would never ask in polish “czym jest twoj maz?”, would you? And that’s the difference. glory Re: What do you think 03.05.03, 09:17 I'm thinking if I have a guts to cut off my own hand with my other hand using only a pocket knife. Some of you probably think "Is glory on the piss again, or what?" Well, surprise surprise, I'm not (yet). Listen to this A mountain climber in the United States amputated his own arm five days after becoming pinned by a boulder and began hiking to safety before being spotted by a search helicopter. Aron Ralston was climbing last Saturday in the canion in south-western Utah when 90 kg boulder fell on him, pinning his right arm. He ran out of water on Tuesday and on Thursday morning decided his survival required drastic action. Using his pocket knife, he amputated his arm below the elbow and applied a tourni-quet. He is alive but in serious condition in a hospital. How about that? Would you do that? Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś
