World Youth Day organizers pass the collection plate
TORONTO - World Youth Day organizers are asking
people to dig into their pockets and make a donation. The
group is facing a shortfall of about $30 million after last
month's six-day gathering in Toronto.
The entire event cost about $80 million and now
organizers are hoping the public will help pay the debt.
"We knew from the beginning that cash flow would be
difficult," said Archbishop Anthony Meagher from the
Bishops' Committee for World Youth Day.
He said they were expecting about 300,000 people who

would pay $240 each.

But there were fewer registrations than expected and the

payments from those who did register have been slow to

arrive, said Meagher.

He attributes low registrations to fears over Sept. 11 and

fears that the Pope's frail health would prevent him from

making the trip.

In early April the Bishops' Committee for World Youth

Day held an emergency meeting with bishops from across

the country who then lent the committee $24 million.

At that time the organizing committee cut back spending

and agreed to spend no more than $80 million.

World Youth Day organizers will be putting large

advertisements in newspapers across the country

appealing to the public to donate.
