Poverty in Australia rising alarmingly: study

Poverty in Australia is continuing to rise at an alarming rate, according to
a new report released by the Uniting Church.

The study recommends a national inquiry into poverty.

The study, "The Other Centenary - One hundred years of poverty lines and
inequality" shows more than two million Australians are living in poverty.

It also reveals the livings standards of the working poor is plummeting.

Uniting Church moderator Reverend Alistair McCrae says the recent corporate
struggles of One.Tel and HIH, highlights the increasing gap between rich and
poor.

"When we learn about the sort of money that's going to the big players in
those industries, most Australians I think, have been quite shocked and we
just have a sense that those obscene amounts of money flowing to individuals
is just...it's not the sort of society we want to be in," he said.
