Masowa emigracja za pracą

18.08.06, 02:55

Gunfire erupted in a northeast car wash Thursday afternoon, leaving one man
injured and numerous witnesses shocked and shaken.

Police are calling the brazen daylight shooting, at the McKnight Village car
wash in Falconridge just after 3 p.m., gang-related and are exploring possible
        links to a serious

Marlborough shooting during a reggae concert on June 17.

Acting Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the Organized Crime Operations Centre
said the victim in yesterday’s shooting, a black man in his 20s, is a member of
a Calgary gang that is responsible for other shootings in the city.

“We’d like to stress that this shooting was not random. The victim was
        targeted,” he said.

The man was treated at Peter Lougheed hospital for non-life threatening
        injuries.

Schiavetta said there may be a connection between yesterday’s gunfire and the
double shooting at a concert at the Calgary Marlborough Community Hall where an
18-year-old Edmonton man suffered eight gunshot wounds and survived.

Another man caught in the crossfire was shot in the arm.

“It may be related to Marlborough and we’re going to obviously look at that to
see if that is a possible motive,” Schiavetta said.

Witnesses using the car wash yesterday at the time of the shooting said they
were shocked by what they saw.

Deepak Bhanot was washing his taxi when he heard a loud bang echo in the bay
        beside him.

“I saw about three shots fired,” he said.

“Then I saw a black man running and he got into a silver car... Isaw him face-
to-face and he pointed a finger at me and I don’t know what it meant.

“I ran back to my car ... Iwas scared ... I had never seen a gun shot before.”

Bhanot said he saw the victim holding his side and limping towards a blue car,
        where another man was waiting.

“I asked him if he was OK but he didn’t say anything.”

The men drove from the scene and the victim was taken to Peter Lougheed, where
        police met up with him.

Meanwhile, the suspect in the silver car, described by witnesses as a Mercedes
with a possible B.C. licence plate, peeled away from the scene with several
        other black men inside.

Wilfredo Pasadilla said as the shots ricocheted through the bay, the victim was
ducking and trying to get into the blue car and he feared the worst.

“It was scary ... I was really nervous for the person,” he said.

New Brunswick's population shrank by almost 2,000 people last year, spurred
especially by the exodus of young people looking for work in western Canada.

Statistics Canada reports that western movement grew by 30 per cent in 2005,
swamping the birth rate and immigration, with Alberta as the No. 1 destination
of those leaving for the first time in a quarter-century.

The decline brings New Brunswick's population to approximately 750,000 people
        as of April 1.

It is not good news for a provincial government that relies on population-based
equalization payments to keep New Brunswick afloat.

Those payments work out to $3,249 per person, and with 1,841 fewer residents in
New Brunswick that means a loss of around $6 million for the province.

Most of Atlantic Canada experienced population declines last year, with numbers
shrinking in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Prince Edward Island
was the only area province to see an increase.

Saint John high school graduate Payce Yeomans is part of the emigration trend.
He's working to save money to move west, a plan he says that's shared by the
        majority of his 248 classmates.

"Most of them. It's either Ontario, Alberta," said Yeomans. "A lot are going to
B.C. to find work and school and other things like that."

The construction boom in Alberta is partly to blame for the mass departure.
Several companies from that province travelled through the Maritimes recruiting
workers, persuading 3,800 New Brunswickers to make the move.

That's triple the number that left for Alberta in 2004, causing an acute labour
        shortage in New Brunswick.

Carpenter Jeff Erb is working on a new seniors' complex in Saint John — the
eldery being the only demographic currently growing in New Brunswick.

He tried working in Fort MacMurray last fall but got homesick, though he said
there's almost as many Atlantic Canadians out there now as at home.

"You go into Wal-Mart out there and you see more people [you know] than you do
        in Saint John," he said.

53 proc. Polaków uważa, że sprawy krajowe idą w złym kierunku.
Polacy-podatnicy zarabiali miesięcznie w ubiegłym roku tylko 1198 złotych. Kwoty
