I went by car and you can do it in about 5 hours in winter. At this time of
year you could almost do a day trip if you get up bright and early.

Wilno is a city I wold love to visit this year. It is probably very similar to
      Lwów...gorgeous.

you can take a coach from Olsztyn. i think perhaps it was Eurolines. not too
long a journey. learn your Russian. finding people there who speak either
        Polish or English ain't easy!
        • nasza_maggie Re: Citytrip to Vilnius 01.06.06, 22:41
          In Wilno??? Are you kidding?????
I think Wilno is also better looked after, than Lwów.

Well, in Punsk which is on this side of the border, it was not easy to find
          people who speak Polish.

Marcus, in Vilnius (Wilno) out of a population of 542,287 (2001 census), 19%
are Poles making them the second largest nationality there, and only 58% are
ethnic Lithuanians. It shouldn't be difficult to find Polish speakers at all.

i'd have to disagree as potentially 8.1 out of every 10 people you meet don't
            understand a word you say!

Most people in Vilnius speaks English or Polish. Just be a bit discrete and ask
politely in a mixture of Polish and English if they speak any of these
languages. Most locals don’t look at the union with Poland as a loving
relationship. It doesn’t make it easier that the local Poles mainly consists of
              backwards and introvert religious fanatics.

I always have sufficient supplies of beer and alcohol at home, so his visit did
                  not affect my everyday life.

perhaps they just don't like to communicate with foreigners?

I get the impression you are fairly on the button with that.

I always liked Latvia better, when driving through.

has anyone been to Latvia? how is it? the only thing i know is that they have
trains, good weather in the summer and a language like Lithuanian robbed of the
                    vowels.

back to the subject of Vilnius, do try "cepelinai", "pelmeni" (rather like
pierogi/kolduny), very good kielbasy and dairy products and excellent bread!
