Able Danger: Cover-Up Worse Than Watergate?
============================================
Government/Barbara Anderson November 11, 2005 -
Appearing on Lou Dobbs Tonight, Congressman Curt Weldon charged “Lou, this is
a cover-up. It’s not a third-rate political burglary. It’s a cover-up of
information on the largest attack in the history of the country.” Congressman
Weldon was speaking of Able Danger and the information he says Able Danger
collected but was not allowed to present to the 9/11 Commission.
Able Danger was a relatively small data-mining operation that ended in 2000.
One of its members, LTC Anthony Shaffer went public, saying that his group
had collected information that identified Al-Qaeda terrorists in several
places in this country before the 9/11 attacks. The implication is that if
this information had been used properly, the terrorist attacks on New York
and Washington could have been thwarted. LTC Shaffer further related that the
members of Able Danger were ready to testify before the 9/11 Commission, but
were never called. In fact, Able Danger was never mentioned in the final 9/11
Commission Report. In a previous interview Congressman Weldon said that we
need to know about a massive amount of data being destroyed. We need to know
who destroyed 2.5 terabytes of data. Weldon says he was curious as to how
much data that actually was, so he contacted the Library of Congress, the
largest library in the world. He said he was told that it’s equal to ¼ of all
the printed material that the Library of Congress has in its collection. This
massive amount of material about the largest and most aggressive
international terrorist organization in the world was destroyed. Special
Forces General Lambert was never consulted before the data was destroyed and
was livid when he found out that his data had been deleted, according to
Congressman Weldon.
In addition to identifying the ringleaders of the 9/11 attacks, Congressman
Weldon says Able Danger warned defense officials about terrorist activity in
the Port of Aden in Yemen, two weeks before that bombing of the U.S.S. Cole
in 2000, which killed seventeen American sailors. That information was also
not included in the final 9/11 Commission Report.
Congressman Weldon referred to remarks made by former FBI Director, Louis
Freeh, who said that the Able Danger information was the kind of intelligence
that could have prevented the hijackings. What the 9/11 Commission did show
was the lack of communication between the different agencies because of
a “firewall” set up to hinder such communication. It has been charged that
the person responsible for that wall was none other than Jamie Gorelick, who
sat on the 9/11 Commission.
Congressman Weldon has gone to bat for LTC Shaffer and reported
earlier: “They have gagged the military officers. They have prevented them
from talking to the media. And the Defense Intelligence Agency has began a
process to destroy the career and the life of Lieutenant Colonel Anthony
Shaffer”. According to Representative Weldon, one day before the Lieutenant
Colonel was to testify before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, in
uniform, they permanently removed his security clearance. The Defense
Intelligence Agency has told LTC Shaffer that they plan to seek a permanent
removal of his pay and his health care benefits for him and his two children.
They have planted scurrilous stories in the media. They have trumped up
charges against him. All this time he is not allowed to speak publicly to
defend himself.
Congressman Weldon has called for a criminal investigation into what he says
is the most important story of our lifetime. He says that he has support from
fellow lawmakers from both parties. He notes that there were people within
the Pentagon who stayed in place from the 1999/2000 period into 2001 and they
are still there today. They have a vested interest in not having the story be
told because some of them are going to be embarrassed because the American
people will see we failed them in 1999 and 2000. It sounds as if he suspects
which department has reason to cover up and thwart any further investigation.
It remains to be seen if members of both political parties will act on this
in a truly bi-partisan way. Their track record is not good, but this is the
security of all Americans at stake. If the mistakes made before 9/11 are not
uncovered, the likelihood of an avoidable tragedy in the future is still
there. Congressman Weldon has been the out-front mover of this story. He
deserves credit for insisting on a valid 9/11 Commission Report that tells
the whole story, let the blame fall where it may.
Running concurrently with Congressman Weldon’s appearance on the Lou Dobbs
show was a poll, asking the question if its viewers would entertain the idea
of voting for a third party. At last reporting, 71% said YES! This underlines
the other polling taking place which reports that both Republicans and
Democrats are seen as not taking care of the people’s business. The Democrats
are busy chasing a Scooter. Both parties profess to care whether athletes
have been on steroids and hold long investigations into that weighty matter.
Meanwhile, the vital business of providing security for all citizens is
perceived to be almost ignored. Is the failure of using Able Danger properly
part of the discontent the people have with both parties?
Congressman Curt Weldon is doing his part in getting this story out, but he
is one person. The rest of American citizens who care about the 3,000 fellow
citizens who met horrible deaths on 9/11 need to get in line behind him. This
is one matter that could stand more investigations.
