Virtuoso pianist and conductor. Born in Argentina, his family later settled
in Israel. Conductor of the Chicago Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, and
frequently conducts at Bayreuth. He is also the conductor of one of the two
major opera companies in Berlin. The proposed merger of the two companies,
put forward by the government, has been opposed by Barenboim. In October,
2000, a nasty scandal erupted when the conductor of the other company was
widely reported to have made an anti-Semitic comment about Barenboim. He
denied making the comment, but Barenboim clearly did not believe him. Bio
