Newsweek ranking

IP: *.icpnet.pl 30.06.04, 12:39
Newsweek is preparing a ranking of language schools. If you read it in
September, you should realise that last year schools could write what they
wanted in their questionnaires e.g. about teachers' qualifications, equipment
etc. and it wasn't checked, at least nobody checked our school or any of the
others I asked. I'm not saying that some schools cheated, just that they
could have cheated if they wanted to and nobody would know. Apparently the
data were checked by 'independent experts' and Newsweek accepts no
responsibility. Maybe it'll be different this year?

It simply cannot be different. Imagine the cost of inspection at the tens or
hundreds of school that will send in their questionnaires. Somebody would have
to train the inspectors, send them to schools, pay them. Rankings are not done
to show the true state of affairs. Their only aim is to help sell the paper
that publishes them. And all the emotions that accompany rankings show that they
      are doing their job.

Why not do your own ranking? Max 'x' points for each category, then add up and
you have a ranking. You can find the info' yourself from the schools'
websites/literature. Here's my idea - trying to keep it very simple.
        Categories Max Points
        Teacher qual's 20
(DELTA qualified native speakers extra 5 points)
        Price 15
        added extras (library/social club/comp room etc) 10
        location 10
        good times of lessons 10
        Group size 10
        Rooms/equipment (audio-video/air-con) 10
        Customer service 5
        Reputation 5

        Total: 100 points

What do you think? Maybe you'd like to post your marks for a school you know?
