hello fellows. I have a problem. I've come across three different ways of
translating this phrase into English: in instalments, on instalments and by
instalments. It's so confusing. Could anyone please tell me how to use each
of them? Or perhaps which one is the most common? Thank you very much.

In Polish kupujesz na raty, in English you pay by/in instalments.(either form
is fine)
"buy on instalments" is a direct translation from Polish (and other languages)
into English. If you enter it into Google you will get 2 (two) UK hits,
otherwise as 'many' as 12. ;)

but it's exactly the google hits that confuse me. you can't treat the search
engine as the only reference. I often use it myself. the results are
nevertheless puzzling. If you enter "bought on instalments" there'll be more
hits than "bought by/in instalments" and the sites are by no means non-native
English only. The problem is that Google won't answer the question, I'm afraid
and that's why I'm asking someone [preferably a native speaker visiting the
forum (are there any?)] else. Thanks.

Well, it's no skin off my nose but just look at the numbers:

"paid by instalments" ~15 000
"paid in instalments" ~12 000

"pay by instalments" ~14 000
"pay in instalments" ~6 000

"bought on instalments" ~49
"buy on instalments" ~12

These are hits from the web, but if you narrow the search to UK pages - and
your spelling of instalments is British - you will see 4 and 2 hits
respectively for 'bought/buy on instalments'. Entering the correct form of
paying by instalments will give you 9 000 hits, paying in - 5 000.

You can buy things on credit, on HP (hire purchase agreement ~ the never never,
on finance, whatever - after paying an initial deposit, the balance of the
purchase price is repaid by monthly payments. People say 'payments' rather
than 'instalments'. You may be charged interest on instalments, you may be
eligible for tax relief on instalments, you may default payment on
instalments, be asked to read notes on them and some people, NOT MANY, will
offer a scheme where you can buy on instalments :O

but if you look for "on installments", it's far more popular - maybe it's the
phrase used in the USA?
Cambridge dictionary says in/by instalments. However, I was taught the
phrase "on instalments" and my teachers were all from UK or studied there ;)

eg: taking out a hire purchase agreement means that goods will be hired to you
for an agreed period during which you pay instalments. You take immediate
possession but you do not legally own the goods until you've paid the last
instalment. So you may take the attitude that - with every payment - you own
that little bit more: najpierw jedno kolo, potem drugie.. :)

Interesting. Never heard of "hire purchase" before. We call it a "rent to
own"purchase. :)

Przeciez w kazdym kraju moze byc inaczej. Ja wypowiadam sie z Kanady. U nas
kupuje sie "ON INSTALMENTS", tak wlasnie "on".
Tak zakupilam moj pierwszy komputer !
