Definetly not! As I already told the other erson who asked the same thing: it`s
overcommercialised.

it sucks! If you are a thinking person don't you ever even consider a
possibility of taking up such thing! It's repetition where no invention or
creativity is involved, total uniforming irrespective of your age, abilities
and personality... Devastating to your mental health

I would NOT recommend it. There's no miracle method with language learning.
just hard work.

My friend tried this for a year at the same time that I studied using the more
traditional Headway book. We started at approximately the same level, but I
made much better progress.

I'd say that Callan is a waste of money. The classes are rather fun though!

minutes twice a week?

I think it's OK for complete beginners who want to speak fairly quickly.
But, for anyone who's serious about mastering the language, I'd suggest old-
fashioned hard work is the only way.

It's nothing special or even new.

Modern coursebooks are much better than the were.

totally boring!
it resembles so called Audiolingual Method used initially to teach the US army
during the war. so definately quite a long time ago.the method was criticised
for it's monotony and inefficiency in the long run. it's aim is a habit
formation, which may be effective with dogs but definately not with people.

I see almost only negative opinions here. I'd say Callan is good when you want
to gain general confindence in speaking. There's not much grammar tho. And as
to the way of teaching itself... they ask you questions from book, which you
have too, but it's up to you whether you read answers or give your own ones.
There are small groups in which you study, and teachers are as elsewhere - some
good and some not. I've tried Callan for one year and I don't think it was
waste of time or money. But in real life I hear bad opinions about it, too.
That gives to think...

I've learnt English with callan method for 10 months. Before I started learning
in a Callan method school I had learnt in other schools with traditional
method.
I don't know whether it's better or worse. I know, that after only 3 months of
learning with this method I've started to understand much better in English.
I think there are advantages and disadvantages of every method. Callan method
is quite good for me even though I am not a deadhead and I am not a parrot.
It is not truth you have not your own inventiveness in answering questions.
There are "why or why not?" questions so you must make the answer up. You
have to say what you think.

Sounds like it's not exactly the revolution it is claimed to be.I think you've
hit the nail on the head by saying it worked for you. A lot of 'traditional'
classroom environments don't work for a lot of students. students should work
out what works for them and teachers should be more aware of how their students
learn a language, as individuals and not as an amorphous mass to be pushed
through several levels in a certain way.

I studied with Callan method only for 2 months. Not long but I simply did not
like it.
For me it was not only boring but it also did not broaden my English knowledge.
It was like repeating, repeating, answering the same questions, using the same
structures during the lesson. It is a parrot-like method for me, for me.
I talked about it with the Callan teachers (who are great people). One of them
told me that at the very beginning he hadn't liked the method as well but later
he had become confident that it was good. In his opinion, for 70% of Callan
students it is a good method, the one that brings very good results. It might
be true.
However, I would not advise starting it. Neither the beginners nor those people
who have learnt English for 10 years. To know the language well, you have to
think. You have to search for the vocabulary you know as well as expand your
vocab, you have to think of the structures, not just repeat them.
For me, it is the worst method of learning English I know. Well, maybe I'm not
in the magical 30%.

Why so many CALLAN schools in Poland?

I had a look at the 'callan' website yesterday. It really is interesting
reading. The thing that amazed me was that Poland has by far the largest number
of Callan schools in the world. Does anyone know why this might be the case?

I think it is because, as it is written on the Callan web site, the only
official branch of the Callan School in London is in Krakow, Poland. It is
probably the initiative of the Polish teachers (I know there are quite a few)
who work for the London school. It is also because of the advertising (FCE in
2 yars). I wonder if anybody has achieved it????????? (learning from scratch
in Poland, not in London of course)
