I feel it means very very close (as close as to hear one's heartbeat).

I think it means 'wildly'... but accept the possibility of being wrong.

          It means very close.
It can also be used for describing something very fast:
I will be there in a heart beat.

            what about the AWAY bit?
Can you say I'll be back in a heart beat ;-))? (or can you???!)

Away means not here. So if you combine, “Heart Beat” with “Away”, you get Away
but not far from here, easily accessible, capable of appearing instantly,
              close.

              > Can you say I'll be back in a heart beat ;-))? (or can you???!)

Yes you can. In fact, your example is a very common use of this expression.

But how would you use it is another story.
Leaving for lunch you wouldn’t say: I will be back in a heart beat. You would
say: I will be right back, or will be back shortly.

There is an emotional connotation to this expression that conveys/indicates a
willingness of going there or coming back.

              Example:
Would you go back to see this movie again, if I could get you a ticket? I would
go back in a heart beat!
This instantly indicates that you liked the movie in the first place.

Vicepresident is a heart beat away from becoming a president.
It means that Mr Cheney becomes the president in case of Mr Bush death.
The heart beat reffers to the one which will not take place.

Considering Dick Cheney's history of heart trouble I find the idea quite
ironic. A classic ploy on Bush's part, a bit like his Dad choosing a supremely
stupid manlike Dan Quayle as vice pres. The best way not to get assassinated..

Very interesting. We have a stupid president now. His dad made stupid man a
vicepresident. He was fairly stupid himself. His predecessor was an idiot.
Befote that we had two stupid men as 37th and 38th presidents. And the one
elected in 1952 was a military man so he was stupid too.
The only smart presidents in a post war era were Truman, Kennedy, Carter and
certainly Clinton. America has been cursed.

Isn't it amazing this country survives?
