      Witaj,

      Pozdr.

On Saturday Lech Kaczyński will have been the president for one year. The
newspaper “Gazeta Wyborcza” asked the Poles how they see him in contrast to the
former presidents – Aleksander Kwaśniewski (1995-2005), Lech Wałęsa (1990-
1995) i Wojciech Jaruzelski (1989-1990). The best president in their opinion
was A.K. – 58% of those being questioned represent this opinion. Lech Kaczyński
is second – 13 %, he has 1% more than Lech Wałęsa and 9% more than Jaruzelski.

If I had taken part at this poll, probably I would have voted the same way.
Aleksander Kwaśniewski was a good president. It’s true that he had his ups and
downs, but during his presidency we joined the EU and the NATO and our economy
status got better. During the first year of his presidency Lech Kaczyński
hasn’t done much for the country. He visited some countries but the
negotiations with the leaders of the USA or Germany didn’t go well. Plus there
was a huge crisis in the parliament – the parties were fighting with each
other, they spent more time on arguing than on deciding what’s good for Poland.
For talking about the presidency of Lech Wałęsa or Wojciech Jaruzelksi I’m too
young to say much about them. Wałęsa was the first president to be voted
democratically and won more because of his status as the “Solidarności” leader
      than of his political skills.

Space shuttle Discovery and its seven-member crew have landed safely at the
      Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Shuttle managers decided conditions in Florida were good enough to bring the
shuttle home at 1732 (2232 GMT), after days of uncertainty about the weather.
The shuttle has been on a 13-day mission to rewire the International Space
      Station (ISS).
Its safe return concludes Nasa's third shuttle flight of the year. Five more
      flights are planned for 2007.
The shuttle gave off twin sonic booms as it descended towards the floodlit
      runway.
The team spent eight days rewiring the space station. They also fitted a
connecting segment that will allow the platform's backbone to be extended
      further in future.
They delivered two tonnes of supplies and dropped off one new resident,
American Sunita Williams, and picked up a returning astronaut, German Thomas
      Reiter

It’s really good that the mission succeeded and that nobody got hurt. I think
it would be bad for NASA if the mission had failed, because than critics would
start shouting that those missions should be aborted or that the technical
state of the shuttle is bad and that is is endangering people’s life. Some
people think we should stop to explore the cosmos, because sometimes it’s wiser
to not know what is out there. I don’t quite know what to think about all those
missions in the cosmos. But they had 3 successful flights this year so I think
it’s not that dangerous anymore as it probably was a few years back, but still
      technology can always fail.

Georgia has agreed to pay twice as much for its gas from Russia, according to
      Russian energy giant Gazprom.
An hour after Gazprom threatened to cut off supplies, the firm announced that
Tbilisi had agreed to pay $235 per 1,000 cubic metres, up from $110.
Georgia had until then refused to accept the demands, saying it was being
      punished for political reasons.
Georgia's prime minister had earlier told a press conference that Azerbaijan
would be its main gas supplier in 2007.
He said Georgia would continue to buy gas from Russia, but did not refer to the
terms of the deal or how it came about.

It is a shame that Gasprom can make other countries pay them more for the gas
they are provided with. It only shows that Russia has still a big influence on
other countries and will use all methods to get what they want. I don’t like
the idea that it is so easy to threaten somebody and that nothing is done about
it. And the worst part is that Azerbaijan lost Georgia as a potential client
and that we don’t know the terms of the deal. Again: it is a shame that
something like that still happens and that Russia still has so much power and
that nobody tries to stop their “political terrorism”.

Polish Railways will introduce more than a hundred additional regional and
national connections for the Christmas Holidays and the New Year.
Extra carriages will be added on for passengers on the scheduled routes,
particularly on those which are most popular with travellers.
The Christmas rush is also being felt by airlines, especially connections with
Britain, where some half a million Poles moved after EU accession. Some tickets
around Christmas and the New Year were already booked up by November

It is a great idea that the Polish Railway has introduced this plan. Many
students want to visit their families during this break, so they can spend this
wonderful time with their beloved. And if there are more connections, they have
more possibilities to get home, they don’t have to be scared that they won’t
get a train ticket. Plus it is great that the airlines did the same things as
the railway, because many Poles live abroad (especially in Britain) and work
there. This holiday is a great possibility to come home and to celebrate
Christmas with their family. Christmas is really important for Poland, so it is
great that railways and airlines try to get families together in a faster way.

Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski revealed in a radio interview that his
predecessor will not take over the post of deputy PM responsible for economy.
The PM informed that as the post is currently taken by Zyta Gilowska, who is
much better qualified (as professor of economy), such a change would not be
      reasonable.
Marcinkiewicz refused to become a minister and he will take charge of one of
the largest state-owned companies. Unofficial sources suggested that he may be
the next CEO of the petrol giant PKN Orlen.
Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz was the prime minister from October 2005 to July 2006
when he was replaced by Jaroslaw Kaczynski. From July to early December 2006
Marcinkiewicz was the temporary Mayor of Warsaw for which post he had to resign
as an MP but he lost in the local government elections.
Marcinkiewicz is currently the most popular politician in Poland, enjoying
approval of over 70% of Poles.

I really appreciate that the Prime Minister did not remove Zyta Gilowska from
her position. She has the qualifications she needs, Maricnkiewicz does not have
them. And it would be really unreasonable if they made this change, because
such changes can’t take place to often and men who are at power should not
remove somebody from their position just because their party member needs a
place at the parliament. I think that Maricnkiewicz shouldn’t be the CEO of a
bank or petroleum giant. He does not have the educational background to do this
and making him a CEO just because of his political position would be
      irresponsible.

British Airways domestic flights have resumed at Heathrow after being cancelled
      since Wednesday due to fog.
The first flight to take off following the suspension left at 1322 GMT, bound
      for Newcastle.
The airline hopes to operate 95% of its Heathrow services - including 87% of
short-haul flights - on Saturday, and a full service on Sunday.
More than 1,000 flights have been cancelled in recent days, and other airports
in the UK have been affected.
BA said 55 flights to and from Heathrow, including 10 domestic flights, were
scrapped on Saturday morning but hoped all 27 domestic flights would fly in the
      afternoon.
It is still using 30 buses to get people around the country.

It is impressive how much people rely on the nature. People can’t attend
meetings or fly to their families because of a simple thing

It is impressive how much people rely on the nature. People can’t attend
meetings or fly to their families because of a simple thing as a fog. And
imagine what a crowd there must have been on Heathrow. One nature can make the
world and the life of people stop for a while and destroy their plans. It is
really annoying but you can’t do anything about it – nature just is present in
our lives. I think it is great that Heathrow arranged buses for the travelers
but I think they should return some of the money to the passengers because
traveling by bus is definitely cheaper than traveling on planes. Now the
situation is stable – good that this crisis didn’t surprise the airport during
the holiday. Now that would be a catastrophe.

That's the idea. I doubt whether your teacher will read all of it, but you keep
doing what you have to do. The next step is to choose ONE, most interesting
item and present your summary and opinion to the class. Personally, I'd make it
shorter by avoiding unnecessary details, but that's the general way of
summarizing/paraphrasing, and responding. Your style will develop with fluency.
          Good effort!
